Is there such a thing as a filter that is already set up like a waterfall type thing? I'm thinking the water coming out of the filter is a bit to strong and that's why it's so noisey. I need to collect more rocks to I can build the filter part a bit better, I'm not liking how the water is coming over the rocks so I need to play around with it a bit or find something different. I have the filter laying down on an angle because I find it to tall for the amount of rock I have for it. I have to pile rocks in front of where the water comes out so it's not a huge strong spray of water flying out of it. Hhmmm...a project for today...lol.

What filter do you have? Can it be submersed completely? I had mine letting the water fall on the driftwood, and just ended up submersing it completely. It had a dramatic impact on the noise level.

So you could always purchase such a filter. If not, instead of rock, you can buy a piece of driftwood and put it very close to the exit part of the filter, or add one of your aquatic plant close to it too. The water running on leaves is actually quite soothing. Now if the pressure is too strong, more rocks, a piece of wood, submerse your filter, or purchase a submersible filter (the Fluval 1 Plus is really affordable).

It's a fluval 2 and can only be submerged about 97%. The top part is (about 5mm) suppose to be out of the water. The whole filter stands about 5.5"-6" so I can have it standing, I just have to move some things around and it would add another 2" of water to my tank making the water area about 6" deep. I have an idea though so I'm going to play around with it this afternoon and see if I can build it better. It would actually make it easier to clean if it was standing.

Personally I like the water sound, and in fact I wake up at night now when I don't hear it, and know that there's a problem with one of my tanks. The fire bellies climb right on top of theirs and sit, so I can't imagine the sound bothers them much. Submerging is one solution if it bothers you, adjusting flow rate on some filters is another, and the third is to create a gentle slope. I use a fake rounded log in one of my tanks which gently guides the water where I want it to go.
