Another newbie :)

Hi all, so about three weeks ago I adopted a green and gold bell frog, now named freddo . I am very new to the frog caring world, and am still learning the ropes . He or maybe she (I'm not quite sure how to tell the difference) was a beautiful bright green and gold and has now turned a fairly dark brown, which I'm pretty sure is due to his environment, but a little worried all the same. We have him in a glass tank which, has a partially perspex but mostly mesh lid. We have rocks, logs etc and water in the bottom and I have now got some water plants, Lilly, rush? and a few others. We originally had him outside, but now have him inside. I keep the blinds shut during the day as it gets really hot inside, is this the best thing to do or will he be okay with the blinds open?? I worry that it may get to hot inside the tank. I also read somewhere that they may change colour during breeding season - could this be the cause of his dark coloring? Or is he sick?? We feed him a diet of approx five flies per day, sometimes crickets. Is this correct???

Hi Loren, Welcome to the forum ..Yay!! another New Zealand-er.

These frogs do change colour. The fact you have had him/her for 3 weeks and also have move him /her in that time would suggest to me that your frog is under stress and needs time to adjust to the new environment. Make sure you have plenty of hiding places for Freddo which will make him feel safe and relax more. You say your frog is eating well so that another good reason no to be alarmed. I would also suggest monitoring the temperature and make sure its suitable. If your shutting the curtains does the enclosure have light? Please if you haven't already check out the care article...Great to have you here .

I'm thinking about putting pebbles (the ones for fish tanks) in the bottom of the enclosure. Is this okay? I think I read somewhere that you shouldn't use stones/pebbles that the frog could possibly eat, but the lady at the pet store said it would be okay - I'm not sure who to believe.

Hi Loren...I wouldn't use small stones/pebbles. What you read was correct, frogs can accidentally consume them. If you can get a photo of the throat that would be good. How old is Freddo? I can see he/she is well fed and looks great.

Im pretty sure he is a he.

I have no idea how old he is. Are you able to tell roughly from his size or any markings??

Welcome to the Forum I too keep Green and Golden Bell frogs and they're wonderful pets.

To tell their sex a male will have a yellow throat and a female will have a white throat if you look at Ebony's avatar you will see the different colour throats.

I've looked at your photos and I can't really tell the throat colour if you could post a photo of the throat I'm sure Ebony will be able to tell you.

For the diet I have a woodlouse colony in the enclosure and other insects I can find. I bought some locusts off of trade me from Ebony to for a bit more of a variety. I tend to let them eat what they want and if they look a bit skinny I give that frog a locust.

dont worry about the colour changing ive had many raniformis over the last two years of my frog hobby and they all change colour, look in my photo album at the large raniformis on the reed above the water and then look at the second pic of the same raniformis when its in the water, it has completely changed to black.
