My name is David. My roommate's girlfriend gave me a tank (I guess it's ten gallons; I have no clue) and I was going to put a scorpion in there but one night we found this green tree frog outside clinging to a gutter near the ground. I am now aware you shouldn't grab pets (frogs) from the wild nor should you release them from captivity into the wild. I named it Schloopy. I think it is a female. Here are a couple of pics:

She looks lovely. I don't know your rules about the capture of wild Frogs where you are, but here its best to catch them as tadpoles and bring them up. I think your tank set up looks great. the only thing I could suggest would be to put a live green plant in for her to climb on and it may make her feel more secure. Be sure its Frog Friendly.

Hello David, welcome to the forum. That's an American Green Tree Frog (Hyla cinerea) without a stripe down it's side? I believe Kurt, the forum moderator has one without a stripe as well.

Probably Hyla cinerea (American Green Tree frog) but there's a chance it's Hyla squirella (Squirrel Tree frog) - does it ever change to a colour other than green? Welcome to the forum.

I am with you John, I think this may be a squirrel treefrog rather than a green treefrog. Here is a pic of my morbidly obese green treefrog. They do look quite different. David's frog's skin seems to have a more translucent quality to it. It kind of reminds me of my greater hatchet-faced treefrog.

Anyway, welcome aboard. It is a nice looking frog regardless if its Hyla cinerea or squirrela.

Schloopy's color doesn't change from green but it does change to a very dark green as opposed to it's normal color. I don't know what triggers it but I'm thinking stress.

I forgot to properly introduce myself. I have lived here in Huntsville all my life and I am 26 with a birthday coming up in November. I took two years of automotive technology (not graduated yet due to technicalities) and am delivering pizza until I can find a job in a shop. I like all sorts of music from pop to black metal to rap but I favor '90s alterna-grunge (Nirvana, Alice In Chains, etc.) '90s hip-hop (NWA, Tupac, etc.) and '60s rock-n-roll (Pink Floyd, the Doors, etc.) I have a Geo Storm in which I am installing a turbo motor from an Isuzu Impulse. It's has been a five-year + hobby. Other than that I really only work to afford my vices.

I hope to find much useful info on this site and I am glad to have found it. BTW... why does it seem all forum mods are named John???

Colour changes occur in frogs based on the lighting situation and/or the color of the background one finds the frog. Dark backgrounds and dim lighting lead to a dark coloured frog, and light coloured backgrounds and bright lighting lead to brightly coloured frogs.
