Hi there and welcome to the forum.![]()
Hi everyone!
I have been interested in getting a tree frog for sometime now and thought I would register here and say hello. The articles on here are very informative. I am a current bearded dragon owner. Well, I will let you know of any questions!
Hi there and welcome to the forum.![]()
Welcome to the forum. What kind of tree frogs are you interested in?
I was thinking of doing red eyed tree frogs! I really want to do poison dart frogs but I read that they are harder for beginners so I think I will wait on them till I have more experience with frogs....
Tell you what.. why don't you tell us more about your background and what your experience is with a exotic type animal and maybe we can point you in the right direction. There are some beginner dart frog species that aren't any harder than keeping red eyes. As long. As you have the commitment and the means to maintain the proper conditions for your frogs you can do darts. That's why your here on a forum to learn how to set every up just right. Then once its all set up and you know you're able to maintain a stable environment then you get the frogs you really want.
I currently own a 36 gallon fresh water tank that I have had for a few years, and also a bearded dragon named John Casey and have had him for a little over a year. I also have my own colony of Dubai roaches and have done other bugs in the past (superworms, crickets, silkworms) so I wouldn't have too much trouble, I think, to starting my own fruit fly colony. I recently got a exo-terra medium rain forest kit for my birthday because they knew I was wanting to get into raising frogs. I like the look of red eyed tree frogs (those red eyes are beautiful) but I like that poison dart frogs are so colorful and seem to be more active to me. I was planning on doing a false bottom on the exo-terra tank (on with a small pond) but I guess I am just a little nervous of venturing into new territory with frogs and all...are there types of poison dart frogs that are hardier (more hardy?) than others?
Yes, I think Dendrobates leucomelas is your best bet for a beginner dart frog. They are hardy, bolder and less territorial than other dart frogs. Dendrobates tinctorius is nice but can be quite territorial and D. auratus can be quite shy.
I was thinking the Leucs as well. The good thing about them is they get along in groups. I just got some Cobalt tints and they are very bold as well but you are limited to just a pair. I got the Cobalts over the Leucs simply because I like the yellow and blue colors. If I was going strictly on which would be the best first frogs i would have to go with the Leucs. Do some research on them. Your first experience with frogs should be with the most active and hardy frogs you can get. I have a group of red eyes and love them to death but they are strictly nocturnal frogs. There will be nothing going on in the daytime. Get a group Luecs and they'll be bouncing around all the time. Once your addicted to the frog hobby then branch out and try the tree frogs or other species that will give you different challenges. They all have something unique that makes them cool. But start off with the type of frogs that you really want. If its darts then find the boldest and easiest species to care for. That will make your first experience into frogs an enjoyable one.
Thanks for the advice guys! I will do some research on them and let you know what I decide!
