    Default Why pyxies?

Just wondering when and what sparked everyone's interest in these amazing frogs. For me it was love at first sight. Remember seeing large male at the Minnesota Zoo during a grade school field trip and just kept thinking to myself how amazing it look.

I think I first saw a giant at the reptile display at Busch Gardens. I was awed by the size and knew nothing about them. I assumed since it was on display at a sort-of Zoo, that they were unavailable in the pet trade. Went home, did some research, found out everything I could, joined this forum, and then happen to find a juvenile/subadult male in my local reptile store!

I honestly can't remember where my interest in them started anymore. LOL I do remember at first I too thought they would be a hard to get species, if not than a species not kept in the trade.

For me, it was their size, and I enjoy watching them eat.

I first saw one at the Louisville Zoo when I was a teen and thought they just looked crazy being so big....I loved the way the skin looked sort of like armor, very different from most other frogs.

I chose mine for more than one reason

    1. I love larger herps and you don't get much bigger frogs

    2. The fact that this is one of the few frogs to defend and protect their young and that to me showed intelligence with my major being herpetology with a focus on conservation and my thesis being on monitor and other reptile intelligence this seemed like a good starting place to see if amphibians had the potential to be just as smart as my lizards (Rex seems able to recognize me over my roommate he will not launch at me anymore but if my room mate was to work on the cage or feed for me he would and does attack him in a instant )

    2. I couldn't turn down the cute face at the pet store!

The first time i seen one was at a reptile convention. I didn't even think i was real until it blinked. After that i knew i wanted one. Nobody was selling them at the time so i left with a few dart frogs. Finally got my first pixie 2 weeks ago. This guys awesome.

this is a very good question. I have always loved frogs when I was a kid, but recently started owning them as pets. I love pyxies for their physique and pacmans for their pattern
