New to frogs here. I got my white's tree frog on the 24th of this month. When he (I say 'he' because I've heard him croak at night) got here, he clung to the back of the terrarium and clung there until evening, where I let a couple of crickets loose and it immediately starting moving, came down, and stalked them. That night it hung out in the water dish.
The next night he ate and still sprawled out in his water dish at night. Last night he refused to eat anything. He didn't come hang out at the water dish at all. He just stayed huddled underneath a fake plant in the corner all night - though he did return some croaks when I played some youtube videos of croaking frogs. I let a cricket roam free in there as well, though I gave it a lettuce leaf to munch on if it got hungry - it was there in the morning.
He won't eat at all today, either. I dangled a waxworm and a cricket in front of him and nothing.I try not to handle him really at all, but I scooped him up (with much protest) to a branch and tried to feed him. He just jumped to the back terrarium wall and looked like he'd try to escape for quite a while.
I noticed some redness under his legs, though I don't know if it's normal at all. Now I'm all creeped out by redleg. Current temps in the terrarium are 76.2 degrees F with 50% humidity.
Temp is fine but humidity is too low. The humidity should be somehwhere around 65-70%(thats the humdity in my tank).
he looks full. Mine sleep their big meal off when stuffed. Much like me after chrismas dinner-LOL. I wouldn't worry unless he goes a week. And he croaked, he's happy.![]()
I'll have to work on that, maybe with a live plant or something. Was also recommended by someone at Petsmart to grab one of those 75w incandescent bulbs and aim it over the water dish for a few hours during the day to get temps and heat up.
Good to hear. Does mine look like an adult to you? I know they eat less. The store said they'd had him for a monthso I don't know if he could be too old of an adult. They fed him 2-3 crickets a day. Then again, he could be both full and stressed, new environment and such. Thanks.
Ya, I'm not sure. They say females up to 5" common is 4.5". But then I hear that there are smaller varieties with max females up to 4". So since I got mine from a chain store there are no clear answers from them. We won't know if we have large or smalls for bout a year? And FYI they always say theyve been in store for a month. I watched my same frogs in there for two months. And when I baught them the manager stuck to the month answer even though I pressured her fir the truth. I would love to get mine from a reptile show but they're all 4 hours away. What a hard ride for a frog. But like resqued dogs, I think they know that their home is better. I find them quite intelgent little beings. Mine wait at appointed perch to eat at dinner time, since I hand feed. Toooo cute!!!!
Frog Update:The little guy is doing alright after all, thanks for the responses and reassurance. I found out I wasn't misting enough so I started misting for about a minute at a time and the humidity shot up in the 70's and low 80's. The frog sprawled out in his water bowl last night and I got him to croak for me a bit via youtube videos, but when I play them and run back to watch him he just stares at me. One day I'll catch him, I wanna see the throat fill up with air
That sounds adorableWhat are the names of yours?
Sad to hear about the chain store thing, but I suppose it makes sense. I called all the Petsmarts in my area looking for a Blue Dumpy (beautiful and only $25) and of the ones that had them, they were all "Oh we don't know how old they are, but we've had them for a month"
I was stuck with Petsmart though. There's a "Herpeton Exotic Pets" here with tons of animals, but I went in pre-researched and their tree frogs were hangin out in gravel substrate and the guy was talking about how yes they swallow it but they poop it right back out... and how I should get some heat basking lamp () and yadda yadda. I wanted to rescue them all from their possible impaction but for my first frog I had to go with one that might be more well cared for. Petsmart had employees that knew all about frogs anyway, the Exotic Pets guys consulted a book when I asked questions!
well u know u have a boy. I named my greener one kermit and the brown one lump. Lump croaked back a couple times so he's a boy--but very shy. Just started to come out to feed in morning like kermit ( shouldve named her miss piggy) I asked don lisk about growth rates and if he could give me idea on how old ours are. But his were 1" in sept and now the size of ours. I just cut a 3" peice of paper to measure mine. I hope we get big ones!!! Mine have started to get their spots. Small white dots with brown around. I also heard that some breeders are going for real spotty ones. And others for ones with fewer spots. Spots are indication of age but I don't know how. I'm just going to feed them everyday, like they expect and wait for them to get "dumpy" and cut em back. I need to get to a real computer and post some Picts. I used a dangerous pebble in my terrarium, very bad, but I siliconed lumps of it together about 50 cent size. I noticed having stone over my heat pad holds more heat. As soon as spring comes I'm getting rid of all that gross moss and putting real stuff in. Tried that living moss, 3 weeks and it still looked dead.
Living moss? As in a type of moss you would purchase at a store - like "Frog Moss" or something? I heard it's great for holding humidity.
I'd love to see pics of Lumpy and Kermit, heh. I should probably get mine measured, I'll wait until tomorrow when I can get someone to hold him while I measure him. Seems to be 2.25" now, but he's all scrunched up and sticking to the top corner of the terrarium so I'm not sure if that counts :P
I would just measure him on the glass. Close enough. Not frog moss, I'm scared of impation, one reason I hand feed. No, I'd go to local greenhouse get Spanish moss or a Few varietys problably. Run it through a dripping hose over night and plant it. But just don't know how I'd clean after that. Maybe a false bottom with a screen, moss on top of that. So I can pull up whole thing and clean under it. People do it for arrow frogs. But they're not as dirty as whites. Can't use native moss cuz it dies. That frog moss is messy and stringy. Too bad I had to use a ton of it to get ground level with plant pots. I may have crowded my frogs a little with too much. I combed forum Picts for vivs, for months. But I think they like all the cover. I'll move things a bit after I clean. That's when I'll wish for simpler setup.
When did you start hand feeding, immediately? How long did it take your frogs to warm to you and such? I know mine keeps trying to crawl up my arm when I have to pick him up and doesn't want to get down, but when it comes to food he's not the pig I'm hoping he'd be (yet!). Refuses to hand or tong feed right now.
How often do you clean your whole tank out? The false bottom thing sounds to me like it could work, but I'm a complete amateur
Sorry I'm slow. Doing this on 2year old iPhone. But anyways, I hand feed(tweezers) right away. Their first day home. I tried to feed everyother day. But kermit would stay awake till 10am waiting for breakfast. I felt bad for him staying up like that. He did that on his 3 or 4th day. Little booger. My son, lee, who's 3, and not so trustworthy with tweezers, feeds them by hand big fat wax worms. Even lump takes it from his fingers. As far as warming up, we haven't handled them at all. I still have frount of cage covered. I have folded up an inch or so, and they are refusing to go in water. Kermit let out an alarm call when she saw gap. they will adjust. I think every week I will move that cover up another inch. When I first got em, they wouldn't get up until tv was off. I'm worried cuz I don't have a quiet room to put them. It's a loft and only 1,400 sq.
Sounds like a pretty good way to slowly get 'em used to you, rolling up the cover and such. Anyhoo, I'll bet they're used to the TV by now, right?![]()
Frog hasn't eaten in two whole days (plus the beginning of tonight), he still refuses to eat. Maybe he is fine but he woke up tonight and started slowly sliding down his half background/half glass grip on the corner. He yawned probably about 10-20 times. I tried to look around the sides of his mouth to see if he was shedding and eating his skin but didn't see any of that. A dangled cricket in front of him for a minute or two did nothing.
You all said he looked full in those pictures, but he hadn't recently eaten... I just assumed he was still digesting. I know "bloating" is another sign of illness aside from the yawning (hopefully not his slow slide down the terrarium, either).
He does appear to have eaten 4 or 5 crickets over the course of the past 5 evenings, but those were just from the first two evenings. He has appeared to have eaten nothing in the next three evenings (then again, this one is just starting...)
I'd just wait it out. Hopefull you'll have a new post and a big ol' poopie. I'll feel like a new mommie, baby talking, all proud of poopie. Lol. Mine stuffed themselves---so use to starving. He'll poop and be hungry. I wonder if the growth gets stunted from being in those pet shops hungry and board?
Forgot to say haven't cleaned yet. I was thinking of doing it the week. But I spot clean everyday. They didn't go to big water dish at all. Just little one. So ithink I'll wait till they're used to no covers. Or for the tank to smell. I'm going to have to research a bit. I see you're on--what up ? And edema makes throat swell to.
I read somewhere, maybe even on these forums, that you can clean the tank completely every 3-6 months (remove substrate, rinse fake plants and such in hot water, clean everywhere, etc). As for other kinds of cleaning in-between I'm not sure... I should probably look that up, too. Good husbandry is what can possibly get 20+ years out of these guys
Still worried about the frog yawning but I haven't caught him doing it again. I released a couple crickets in his terrarium - I tried to dangle them in front of him but lost grip on the tongs :-/ He appeared to be actively hunting them for a bit... lol, he somehow managed to slowly follow one off of a high branch and into some fake shrubbery that was very tightly packed near the glass. I swore he was gonna get stuck, he's so fatbut he made it through and twisted upside down on the bottom and then pulled himself right side up. He never caught the crickets though as far as I can tell, though who knows. I'll be combing for poop.
He spent 80% of the night just chillin in his water bowl. I actually imitated some croaking with my own voice while looking at him and he croaked right back!! It was awesome! Later, I was vacuuming the front room (late night vacuuming) and as soon as I turned it off I heard him croaking longer and louder than ever from the other room. Somehow I think the sound of the vacuum inspired him
I still worry, what with the food situation... I may need to get him to sleep on the top of the glass today by placing him there if he doesn't go up by himself, I need to see if I can find those two crickets - whether they're being wily or they were eaten.
