Angry Vet says hookworms, I need poo pro's

I'm hope it's morning in new zeland so some poo pros can tell me bout hookworms. Vet here had to check resorces to see if horseshoe shapes would be hookworms. But hes only seen one frog in 10 years. I live in cow country, I can't belive he didn't know for sure. I can't find pancure-C anywhere. Private petshop gave me metro+ for fish and told me to check doses on web. No dice. One site said hookworms were impossible to get out of Viv. Help I have touched this poo!!!!! Got from chain store, both eating well, poo is firm, but one frog has backbone visible with big belly, and it hasn't changed in 3 weeks. How do I dose frogs and get worm eggs out of tank? The frogs also had no spots when they got here. Now plenty showing up--- relevant?

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

Im sorry but Im not able to help you in regards to worms. I would suggest trying to take a photo of the eggs if you can so members here that have had experience with them can help.

Can I just ask though..how come you think New Zealander's are Poo Pro's? lol

Didn't assume all NZ knew about frog poo. But whoever wrote fecal exams from NZ. Frog-O-t his name. No visible worms. Microscopic. Local vets here treat cows, lucky to even have one look at frog poo. Cant post Picts on Junk iPhone. I read this forum for months before getting frogs. Should all parasites give frogs runns? Is that the sighn to look for? Ur a sweetie-- makes me miss my island home. Good humor and aloha. G

You need to find Fenbendazole to treat your frog. Did the vet describe what he found in the fecal sample, eggs, larva? L3 (third stage) hookworms can penetrate through the skin.

oh Paul. I missed u. Vet said they were horseshoe shaped and had to check refrences. One site said the eggs live in viv for 2 years. Like bleach won't kill them. Omg!!!! I need wormed too!!!!:@ I live 2 hours away from vet and tried to have him send med in mail after I weigh frog. But he wants me to drive them down there in sub zero temps. I don't even know how far I'd have to drive for a real exotics vet. Please tell me stage 3 doesn't look like a horse shoe.

Hookworm eggs hatch and the adults develop in the soil, if the feces are old or the worms are in the soil, you could possibly get some. Eggs are passed in the feces and if the vet saw horseshoe shapes, it was likely eggs or not hookworms at all. Sounds like you need a good vet.

Hookworms are very possible whether caused from your own viv conditions or from where the frogs came from. First off they are decently easy for a vet to spot and panacur isnt that hard to find but I would suggest sending a fecal to DR David Frye. Its not that pricey and he will give you a definite answer on whether or not you have hookworks, lungworms, coccidia and all the other nasties. He will also set you up with the treatment needed. Usually its just a simple dusting of the food once a week for 8 weeks then you test again.
Keep in mind if you have a higher load of hookworms you will need to break down the viv and start over after sterilizing it to get rid of them all together otherwise your just treating the frogs in a contaminated viv. This just causes them to become recontaminated and over time there is talk of excessive treatments becoming immune,
Your best bet is to quarantine your frogs when you get them in tubs or anything that is easily cleaned and sterilized so you can have fecals done before they go into a viv and contaminate it.

thanks but this was an old post braught up out of spite. I have dealt with the good doctor, he is quick and thorough. The nearest vet is in the next state, this was my only option. I waisted 50$ on other vet.
