I wanna buy a bulk of crickets for my pac man and soon to be FBT's. The thing is my girlfriend will let me get 250+, but they have to stay in the garage. The problem I see with that is how cold it gets at night. Right now it's dropping down to lower 60's and upper 50's F. Will they be ok in this kind of weather. Last time I had FBT's, the crickets would sometimes get out and end up in the house till they died from lack of food and water. So my girlfriend doesn't want them in the house till I feed them to the frogs.
I've managed to breed crickets with their temps ranging from 62F to 78F, so I'm sure they'd survive the high 50's. I've also put them in the freezer for a minute or so with no ill effects (apart from being slow, easy pickings for a frog).
You could always get them a heating pad or even an incandescent bulb for a heat source at night if you are worried. You might want to work on cricket-proofing your container if you've had enough escapees to get them banished to the garage, what do you keep them in?
I was using a big rubber maid from wal-mart housing 100 crickets at a time. They only escape when I was transferring them to a bag to add the Rep-Cal on them. Plus I hate the chirping sounds they make. It drives me nuts. I'm going use more of Night Crawlers and blood worms and maybe once or twice a week with crickets, for the FBT's. For the pac man he will get Night Crawlers, Super Worms and crickets, roaches as well and once a great while a pinky or a feeder fish.
When I kept several dozen crickets at a time, I had to close them in a wardrobe in our spare room b/c the chirping drove my husband nuts. We didn't use the room, and therefore didn't heat it, it stayed anywhere from 57-60 degrees in there and they did fine.
I think they should be just fine in that cold of weather. I've seen them live in the 40s and when in even colder weather some did stop moving but a few minutes in a warmer environment and they perked right up! I've also put them in the freezer and even after being in there for 10-15 minutes and throwing them in a cage, sure enough a few minutes later I would see it jumping around. They are pretty hardy.
Thanks for the response, everyone. I just don't want to buy 25 dollars worth to wake one morning to a bunch of dead crickets.
