    Default Hello from texas!

Hey everyone! i'm new to the forum and pretty new to frogs, but that's why i'm here - to get answers to my questions and to learn how to properly care for my frogs. i would like to apologize in advance if i'm doing something wrong and it upsets anyone (i was a member of a dog forum that would tear people apart if they weren't doing things right, and i want to avoid that here).

okay, so that being said, i have 3 frogs, a medium sized tree frog, a large tree frog and a firebelly toad- this is where they live. (don't mind the dying plants, i was trying to revive them.)

our newest additions to the 10 gallon tank are a snail and a fiddle crab for the water part to clean up all the suicidal crickets.

outside of these guys, i also have 3 dogs and a cockatiel - yup, it's a full house here.
i think that's about it for introductions - if ya'll have any questions feel free to ask. =)

Welcome to the forum. The majority of frog enthusiasts will tell you that mixing species is a very bad idea. I wholeheartedly agree with it. Aside from the fact that most amphibians in the pet trade are wild caught around the world and putting them together can pass their exotic disease between them, they also produce toxins that are toxic to other species, including other frogs and toads. The following article is written mainly about newts and salamanders, but it also covers fire bellied toads, and I believe it mentions tree frogs as well. All of the info applies to frogs:

Hello! Welcome. This is a great forum, and everyone is nice. You'll get all the info you need and plenty of advice. It's good you're spending the time to find out what you need to know.

I agree that mixing species is bad, for the reasons John mentioned, but it would be easy to make happy homes for all of them.

thanks for the info and being nice! =)

i had suspicions about mixing species, however the person i got the firebelly from (the one that started it all) had it in the same tank as another tree frog and maybe a lizard or two, anyway, i was under the impression it was okay. they're pretty big animal people, too, so questioning them didn't really cross my mind.

since that's been cleared up, how big of a space would a firebelly need?

That setup actually looks good for the fire belly. The only thing I would add would be a rock in the water so the toad could have a resting spot and still be in the water. The tree frogs will need enclosures with height and lot of branches and big leafy plants. They also just need a water bowl to soak it. It should be shallow. Why don't you post some pictures of them..maybe we can help you to identify them so that we can provide the proper advice for their care. They are a little more picky when it comes to temp and humidity requirements than the fire bellies.

I usually suggest 10 gallon tanks for fire-bellied toads, but I also suggest more than just one. They're fun to watch in a group. I agree with Cheri about land for the toad.

If the treefrogs are the same species, they can be in the same tank, but otherwise you'll need two. Once we see pics, we'll definitely be able to help.

Welcome aboard. Your treefrogs are Hyla cinerea, AKA the green treefrog. They are native to the southeast US.
I can't tell if you have a drainage layer in your tank or not. Having one will help with keeping your plants alive. The drainage layer will prevent your plants' roots from soaking in water and thus rotting. You should also have a capped PVC pipe going through the substrate. This will provide a way for a siphon hose to reach any excess water and drain it of. The pipe should be wide enough for the hose to fit through and be notched at the bottom to allow for water flow.

    thanks for the info. =)

i do have the rocks and charcoal at the bottom for drainage, but i don't have the pipe. i'd actually never heard of it until now. lol.

Yes the yellow spots are normal and nothing to worry about. Consider them "frog freckles".
