    Unhappy Sick Red Eyed Frog

My red eyed tree frog has lately gotten sick. We just moved and I am sure that stressed him ALOT. Well lately, his eye has turned brownish and wouldnt close all the way. Finally, his pupil looks like it fell off all the way, and his eye is still connected, just a gell sack with no covering. My husband is sure he will probably die within a week. I was wondering if there was anything at all I could do. Any meds or anything to help my frog out at all.

You are going to need veterinary assistance to have any chance of helping him. If you don't have a qualified local vet try Dr. Frye, shoot an email with pictures and info to dr.frye.dvm@sbcglobal.net.

Do you have any idea the average costs of this? I can also try and get some pictures up here in a minute or two.

If money is a factor I would consider culling that frog. He is in bad shape by the sound of it and I would not let it stay that way. Treatments, fecals, and tests can run you a few bucks but Dr Frye is the guy to go to. Asking about cost would be the last thing I asked if one of my frogs were that bad off, Sorry to be an A S S but its the truth,

Is it one eye or both? Frogs not infrequently recover from the loss of one eye(I think it is safe to say from the description that at least one eye is gone) and do fine. I have found numerous one eyed frogs in the wild over the years that had lost an eye due to traumatic injury and yet were doing well. Have also seen a couple captive frogs loose an eye and recover although they were toads which tend to be a bit tougher than red-eyes. If the frog was previously healthy and in good condition I would say the chances are about 50-50 that it will heal up on its own but he will be blind in one eye of course. Should take about three or four weeks to close up all the way. As described that eye is gone and you can either leave it alone and see if it closes up or put a little nesporin on the wound if it seems infected. If it is both eyes I would cull the frog as has been recommended.
