Default New frog ID and a little help.

I was at the pet store today doing a cricket run and I couldn't resist this little guy. He was labled as a Blue Dumpy tree frog. Can anyone tell me a little more about him? Also what kind of live plants are safe for him? Here are a couple pics.

    Thanks

It is a White's tree frog, you should be able to find plenty of info under that name. Here is a care sheet to get you started and a search of the forum will bring up plenty of discussion on their care.

    Thanks Tony.

Now I think my biggest question is what are some different kinds of live plants that are safe for the frog?

They are kind of heavy and rowdy as far as frogs go. Stick with broad leaf plants with sturdy vines or stems. Get lots of sticks and branches for him to climb on. What size tank do you have for him?

Congratulations, he/she is so cute. I have Gray Tree frogs and a few are still that small, but the others are big fatties almost 2 inches long. When I first set the tank up the frogs were very small and the plants I bought were sufficient for their size at the time. Since they have grown so fast and big most of the plants flop over under the chubby little bodies, but it has educated me which plants are the best. Their favorite plant is the snake plant, Sansevieria Trifasciata, family Agave, Agavaceae. It has a very sturdy broad leaf, resembling a sword, that can grow to several feet if allowed. They snuggle down the leaf were it grows from in the pot and the leaves can handle even the heaviest frogs. You will need to either keep it in a pot, which I do, or plant it down several inches in the bottom soil, it can get very top heavy. Another plant they love and spend plenty of time on is a prayer plant, Marantaceae (family), it's botanical name is Calathea, that looks like a dieffenbachia and Aglaonema, but don't get a either of those because they're poisonous. There are different varieties of the prayer plant that may not be as sturdy, I'll post a few pics for you of the plants.
Here is a list of some non-poisonous plants that are sturdy enough for a good sized chubby tree frog
    *Aloe
*Anthurium or Arum, Araceae (they get big red, plastic looking flowers with yellow spikes)
*Dracaena, Agave,Agavaceae (same family as the snake plant) The size and thickness of the bladed leaves vary, so you may need to look around for the best variety like the Dracaena reflexa or Dracaena deremensis, which have broader and thicker leaves. I have several of these in my frog tanks too.
*Banana, Musaceae, these plants can get really big though
*Golden pothos, Epipremnum Pinnatum, Family Arum, Araceae (same family as the Anthurium) This is the most common and recommended plants for frog terrariums. I have several of these in the tank too. They will grow like a vine. They can be hung from the top of the terrarium and let to hang down or planted on the bottom and strung around the tank.
*Philodendron, Philodendron, Also in the Arum, Araceae, family. These are my favorite plants. There are a wide variety of plants in this family, most grow like a vine similar to the pothos. The best varieties are the Philodendron: erubescens (red emerald), scandens (both are vine like) rugosum, 'Lynette, and pedatum (florida) (all have large sturdy leaves)
*Spathiphyllum, Spathiphyllum, again in the Arum, Araceae, family. It has a flower that looks like a peace lilly. (it maybe but I am not sure)
I believe all these plants do very well in frog terrariums with the lighting, temperature and humidity they require. I have snake plants, pothos, prayer plant, a palm and a few others, that are growing wonderfully with the fluorescent grow light, 72-78' F Temp. and 70-80% humidity in the tank.
Hope this helps and best of luck with your new froggy.
