    Default Unexpected Addition

    Hi all!
My boyfriend unexpectedly bought me a pacman from Petsmart today, and as this was a surprise I was unprepared. I usually like to have things ready for a new animal before bringing one home, but in this case I wasn't. Here's the answers to the questions I'm supposed to post.

    1. Size of enclosure
    10 gal
    2. # of inhabitants - specifically other frogs and size differences
    just one
    3. Humidity
I'm unsure. I'll have a hydrometer within the next couple hours, though.
    4. Temperature
Currently 76 F. The tank I'm using has a UTH already stuck on the bottom but I haven't plugged it in. I know it should be on the side, but I don't want to try to rip it off and damage it. Should I just go purchase a light and dimmer?
    5. Water - type - for both misting and soaking dish
Dechlorinated tapwater, however I think my boyfriend might have expanded the eco-earth with tap. Does this need to be changed out or after sitting out will it be ok?
    6. Materials used for substrate
    Eco-earth
    7. Enclosure set up i.e. plants (live or artificial), wood, bark and other materials.
    - How were things prepared prior to being put into the viv.
Artificial plants, water bowl, 3 hides (plastic and terra cotta) all rinsed with extremely hot water.
    8. Main food sources
Dubia Roaches and earthworms, but I havent fed him his first meal yet. Should I wait a day for him to settle in?
    9. Vitamins and calcium? (how often)
I have ca powder +d3 and hertivite. I'll use the ca powder 2x a week and the vitamin once.
    10. Lighting
    None yet.
    11. What is being used to maintain the temperature of the enclosure
    Nothing yet.
    12. When is the last time he/she ate
    Unsure.
    13. Have you found poop lately
Only had him for a few hours
    14. A pic would be helpful including frog and enclosure (any including cell phone pic is fine)
    15. How old is the frog
    Unsure. Help?
    16. How long have you owned him/her
    3 hours
    17. Is the frog wild caught or captive bred
Petsmart didn't know, so I'm assuming wild caught?
    18. Frog food- how often and if it is diverse, what other feeders are used as treats
    Should I get some?
    19. How often the frog is handled
    Not at all yet.
    20. Is the enclosure kept in a high or low traffic area
    Semi-high traffic. Should I cover 3 sides?
    21. Describe enclosure maintenance (water changes, cleaning, etc)
I'll change the water everyday and look for poop everyday, clean out the substrate once a month.

Any idea what type he is? I do have some frog experience, but only with African Clawed Frogs.
He buried himself down in the eco-earth and has been there since I brought him home.
Also, I have some panacur on hand. Would it be a good idea to deworm him right away considering he came from Petsmart?

yes, you need to maintain proper temps, offer food after light are off and temps dropped ( about half an hour) for better feeding response.
    day - 80-82, night 75-78

    5. Water - type - for both misting and soaking dish
Dechlorinated tapwater, however I think my boyfriend might have expanded the eco-earth with tap. Does this need to be changed out or after sitting out will it be ok?

unfortunately you need to redo it, heavy metals won't disappear over time.

Thank you! I'll make sure to get a heat lamp and replace the eco-earth asap!

Should I take him to the vet for a check up after a while, or only if there's a problem?
Also, he had been on some kind of wood chips (ugh I know), is it very likely he could be impacted? I didn't notice any obvious bumps, but I also didn't handle him very much.

I'm just really nervous. He's my first non-aquatic amphibian and I'm not sure what to expect.

you're welcome, that's all right, feel free to ask as many questions as you like and share as many pictures as you like or just brag about him, that's a place to do it!
as for wood chips he used to be, just watch him, if he is eating/pooping it is all good. you an take him to a vet, but really no need, you'll just stress him out, he looks great and heathy!
oh and if you're getting thermometer and hydrometer, get digital.

    - edit just noticed you have a hognose, I.AM.JELOUS! we can't have them where i live

Yup, my thermometer is digital and my hydro will be too! I'm no stranger to herps. And I was actually surprised how plump and clean he looked. I'm used to my local pet stores being extra awful.
I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions as I go. lol

I prefer animals over jewelry any day! Haha He's actually bought me my bearded dragons as well as the start up roaches for my dubia colony (he's a keeper lol), which is amazing because he insists he's not a "critter" person. Lol I think I'm beginning to sway him.

Oh, and my hognose is one of my favorites! He has so much personality! I had been dying to get one for a long time before I eventually got him.

    I thought of another question.
Right now he's in my room. Is dim room light going to disturb him at night (along with a low volume tv)?

It won't a whole lot unless he is right next to it.
