How do you know if your frog is in estivation? I cant find any pictures of a frog in this state. My frog hasnt eaten for about a week and I am really starting to worry. He has only moved a couple of times in the last week and now he looks like he is losing weight. I have offered him different types of food but he is not interested in it. Is it possible the tank is getting too cold at night? I am using a heat lamp and a heat mat.
Even so i dont think it has gone below 70 atthe low. Can this trigger estivation? Also how long can they go without food?
I'll take a shot.
I am going to guess that temp is not the only thing that triggers frogs to estivate. Shorter photo period, humidity, changes in barometric pressure I would imagine could have an effect on them. Their natural instinct is to do this during the cold season. So, in addition to keeping these poor guys in glass cubes for our enjoyment and sake of posting pictures of them on frogforum.com....we keep them from estivating by keeping the temps and humidity consistent. I would imagine they will get agitated because of this. The adult cranwelli we just acquired a few days ago has been a bit overly active. Pacing the glass a bit. Shes eating, looks good, her temps are 75-80, has fresh substrate. I would like to actually let her do her natural thing, but want to make sure the conditions are right first. When we got her we were told she was a picky eater and ate live mice. So far she has eaten night crawlers, crickets, and a few pinkies-even frozen. I dont think a week is too bad, and it probably depends on the age/size of the frog. Has its bowels moved since its last feeding? Maybe try giving it a good soak in some warm water.
