Hi. My mother has a small backyard pond where there is a group of young green frogs. They were spawned summer before last and metamorphosed this past summer.
Yesterday my mom came accross one of the frogs thrashing about in the pond, flipping belly up, and sinking under the water. She fished him out of the pond and set him up in a small enclosure where he has been ever since. He is (surprisingly) still alive, but his head seems permanently twisted to one side and he has no real balance.
Does anybody know what could possibly be going on with him? Any type of infection that could cause these symptoms? The other frogs seem to be largely in hibernation mode and it was pretty cold out when he was found. Our plan was to try putting him back in the pond tomorrow when it's supposed to be warmer and let him figure out where to go from there. Is that too cruel? Could he possibly be contagious to the other frogs?
Unfortunately we have too much on our plate right now to be able to keep him as a long term captive. Would it be best if we had him euthanized?
Any guideance on this would be appreciated.
Yikes! Seven months and no replies. I feel sorry for you man. If the frog is still around, can you take a pic so we can see the "damage"?
Occasionally a cry for help slips through the cracks. It's very difficult to know what was wrong with that frog, so I don't blame anyone for passing up this thread.
