Hi:
Two days ago I brought home my first frog. A White's Tree Frog named Barney. He seems to be doing pretty well and he ate three crickets last night with no problem. I do have just a few questions I hope someone can help me with.
Since I put him in his new home I haven't seen him climb at all - limbs, glass, vines, nothing. He always stays on the bottom of the terrarium. Is this normal? I was under the impression that they spent most of their time up high in their enclosure.
What causes White's frogs to change color? He's gone from bright green to brown and back again a few times.
As far as feeding goes, I've given the crickets some of Fluker's Orange Cubes. Should I also be dusting them with a calcium supplement in addition to the cubes?
Last question. When doing any kind of maintenance to the terrarium like cleaning it out, should this be done at night so as to not disturb the frog's sleep or can it be done during the day?
Thanks!
Dont worry about him not being up on the walls and vines it will take him some time to adjust to his home, wait a week and he will be up and around on his vines.
They will change colors due to tempureture and stress.
Dust the crickets with calcium 2-3 times a week.
When doing maintenance it dosn't really matter i clean all my reptiles tanks during the day including my whites tree frog tank and my horned frog tank.
Hope this helps!![]()
I agree give him time to settle in. Just make sure you're temps and humidity are okay. Feed the crickets with cricket food as well as carrots, leafy greens, ect. Make sure he has plenty of foliage for hides. In time he'll be up running around.
Hello, welcome and congradulations. I took in several Gray Tree froglets several months ago, so I am also a new owner. Most of the froglets took some time to adjust to their new diggs so don't be alarmed. Since Barney, I love the name, is eating that's a very good sign, since it tooks several weeks to get some of mine to eat. Several also turned dark green and black, most likey due to stress, after I took them in and stayed that way for months, only turning light green and gray when they ate. I agree that in time your froggy will be bouncing and climbing, mostly at night. Mine are nocturnal, I believe so are the White's, so during the day they basically lounge around until lights out and then the party's on!LOL I find it easier to handle them during the day since they are a bit lazier during this time and will be more cooperative. I take mine out of the tank to eat in a seperate container and during this time, about once a month or so, clean the tank out. Best of luck and hope this additional info helps.
Hey, thanks for the help everyone. I stayed up and watched him for awhile last night and he was pretty active so that's probably a good sign.
