Hi all,
For the past few months I have been keeping a group of 4 Mallorcan Midwife Toads, which were all doing very well, eating everything that went into the tank and remaining very plump and active. However, upon opening the tank this evening I found the largest toad (2.5cm) dead under the cork bark. The only difference I have noticed is that the skin has thinned slightly in small patches on its back and belly. I have checked all the other toads and all still seem healthy, and have eaten plenty of crickets today. Does anyone have any idea of what could have caused the death and what I could do to prevent it ever occuring in the future?
Thanks, George.
Maybe it was a fungal infection, in which case I would treat the frogs in a terbinafine hydrochloride (Lamisil) bath. Just mix 1 ml of terbinafine hydrochloride per 200 ml of distilled water. Soak the frogs/toads for ten minutes once a day for ten days.
Thanks for the advice.
I didn't think about fungal infections, but it makes sense as I cannot find any other possible causes that fit. I have completely cleaned and disinfected the tank and moved the toads to a different tank for the time being. They all still seem happy and healthy, so hopefully it proves to be just a one off freak event.
Thanks for the help, George.
