The Eco earth or a type of moss? I've found the eco earth while maintaining moisture, reaaaally makes them dirty quick, so I try to put a moss layer down on top.

I use LECA (clay balls for hydroponics) topped with a thin layer of long fiber sphagnum moss for most of my vivs. Plants absolutely thrive in it.
