Under-tank heater!

Ok so I have heard some say that under tank heaters are unsafe. I use them for both of my horned frogs who love to burrow right ontop of them. I'm not sure if this is because they enjoy the heat or due to the heater being directly under the "hide". I have heard of some instances of amphibians and reptiles preferring to cook rather than be in the open and vulnerable. So in the end what I am asking is are under tank heaters safe? When used as direct with corner inserts raising the terrarium up.

IMO they are completely safe. I have used several with no problems, in fact i use one inside my plastic cricket incubator and have for months now with no trouble. The only problem i can foresee is if you have a water feature and it leaks onto the hot glass and cracks it.

Theyre safe for crickets, or do you mean they wont burn the frogs either? Does anyone have personal experience that their frogs got cooked by one of these under the tank?

I have never heard of a frog getting hurt by one but I have heard of snakes being actually killed by them I'm not sure if there is any merit to it though.

I have never used them before but from what I heard they should be safe. It's the heat rock that you should stay away from.

I'm gonna go home and check the temp with a heat gun. Ours is on a wire rack and cranwelli has been doing well for a while.

Mini heater under a 5 gallon tank, gun right on it through the glass was 90 deg. Put the gun under the tank right up against the back of the pad it was 97.

I just started using mini-under-tank heaters for my pixie and albino cranwelli. I was concerned about the same thing but didn't wanna fool with lights and cords for multilple tanks. Now that I have them in use I feel that they are a very safe and effective means of providing the necessary temp range for these animals.

I mean it is sitting directly on a plastic tub and doesn't burn it.

I'll check the temperature of the substrate today and report the findings.

The temp with the gun against the actually substrate(eco earth in our case, about an inch) is about 84.
