Newts and toxic plants (Chara?)

Is Chara (the algae) toxic to newts? I put some in with my Eastern Newt ($5.99) from the pet store, and it died after 4 weeks. A botanist I know said Chara is toxic to mosquitos, and maybe other animals as well.
