Default How fast does a P. adspersus grow ?

    Hi Guys:

My son and I just recieved our adspersus form SweetArrow Reptiles. He is a froglet, only about 3/4 - 1 inch long. How fast do these guys grow ?

How often should I feed him ? He seems to have a tremendous appetite. Any special care for such a young frog. I have many frogs, yet never dealt with one so young.

    Thanks

The more high protein food you feed it, the faster it will grow. Remember to keep food of an appropriate size and dust regularly. I got my male, Kadesh, when he was the size of a quarter. On a diet of worms and gut-loaded crickets, he doubled his size in a matter of weeks and continued to grow steadily as the food items got bigger. Congrats on your new addition-can't wait to see some pics (hint hint ).

Also make sure when feeding high protein offerings that you are providing ample heat and a small water dish for the froglet to soak in. These guys have appetites, sometimes bigger then they should and a high protein offering like earthworms can begin to rot inside there body before they can digest it all. Basically your froglet can bloat and die. Currently we are caring for (45) Pyxie froglets. We offer up crickets daily that are free roaming in the enclosure and we place them in a feeding tub 2 out of 3 days and offer worms, dubia roach nymphs and crickets. We let them get their fill for 2 days then on the third day, they digest. No additional items are given. We call it "poop day" around here. These things are a blast to watch grow. We believe that we might be in the presence of a couple of the 10 + inch monsters (hopefully). Of the 15 in our oldest group, we have several large ones and then we have 2 that are just beasts already in comparison with the rest of the group. They are so awesome. Already crouching down and doing the Pyxie Death Crawl (as we refer to it) when they stalk their prey.

Because we are documenting their growth, behavior, appetite, etc. It's quite a task. Requires at least 3 hours everyday but the payoff is awesome. These guys are a hoot. They just bark nonstop. Right now while I am typing, there are about 4 of them going back and forth barking at each other.

So are you doing this research for any kind of institute or university of any sort? Or is it for your own personal curiosity?

    Hi Jeff:

Thanks for the reply. So the feeding schedule is as follows: two days fed, 1 day break & repeat this cycle ?

We have a full grown P. edulis, he ate voraciously when he was younger, now he seems to be content with every two days. I realize as they get older that feedings should be spread out, am correct in assuming this is the same for an adspersus.

Also you mentioned "barking", when I went to move the little guy today to clean his water dish, I thought he did let out a sound, kind of like a poof or maybe it was a "woof" of air. Not to young to vocalize ?

    Thanks

    Hey John,

I have about (35) PacMans at the moment that I am caring for. Most are 1 1/2 to 2" SVL and I am offering them (1) large cricket every other day. They are attacking them pretty much as soon as they hit the enclosure and I have noticed that this allows them to poop on the day off. It's working pretty good. They all look great and are putting on size tremendously. My aurita's on the other hand, are a little bit bigger and I am offering them about 4 worms each, every other day and a large cricket on the days in between. These guys are crazy aggressive. As soon as the food items hit the enclosure, they pop up from their spot and chase it around the enclosure. One thing that I am sure all of you have heard before, that I can't stress enough is the importance of gutloading your insects. Your herp is only as healthy as the stuff that he is taking in. We spend over $40 a week on fresh fruits and vegetables for our feeder insects alone. A varied diet is also nice. If you can find another type of staple food to go alongside with the crickets that is nice. We are currently raising dubia roaches, small medium and large crickets and worms. Most of our frogs welcome each food item.

My cranwelli is still a shy eater. In 2 months I have barely caught a glimpse of it eating, but it does eat. The ornata we just picked up is more agressive, but only my girlfriend has witnessed it lol.
