Prolapse

Ok well about 3 months ago I lost a RETF due to a prolapse. I tried placing him in sugar water solution didn't work and then he went into a strange state and died in a matter of an hour. Well I had another RETF as his partner and tonight I saw him going potty(sounded better than saying taking a **** lol). During this time I noticed what looked like another prolapse...... it was protruding from his butt about 1/8 of an inch or less BUT was noticeable. I immediately remembered what a friend of mine told me about using a Qtip and some Vaseline to nudge it lightly to help it go back in. When I reached in the tank he got scarred and fell into the water. When he came back up IT was back in... I just need some info on what to do from here. At this current time I am feeding him every 3 days(Feed on monday then wait 2 days feed on thurs etc....). I am feeding him 2 crickets. The crickets are about half an inch in size. My frog is about 5 months or so old. Hes old enough to Call if that helps about his age. His size is about 2inches. Hope I have given enough info. Just worried about my little guy.

If this is a recurring problem for you, I think you should consult an amphibian savvy vet. Maybe Bruce (herpvet) could offer some observations (not a diagnosis). It might be worth private messaging him to see what he thinks.

Could it be I'm just feeding it toooo much? I'm gonna feed him again in about 4 days. He hasn't eaten in 2 so 5 days total without food. I just want him to get his self together before I feed .

Sorry for double post but I private messages herpvet. Thanks for the suggestion . I checked on my frog and he seems fine. He's actually hanging from his bamboo looking for food lol he's such a fattie

Sorry, this is going to have to be brief, but a couple of things.

With a prolapse I would always wonder about underlying metabolic bone disease complex and/or parasites. Consulting a vet who can examine the animal is always going to be best, and I would strongly recommend that - radiographs for possible MBD complex and faecal checks for parasites would probably be high on the initial tests list.

So yes, I would certainly get him to a vet if possible. If you post your cricket supplementation regime here others could comment on it with regards to likelihood of MBD complex (you can only say "should be fine or not" - we don't have all the answers), but testing is the way to go I would say.

Thanks for the info. I have examined fecal samples before with micro and never seen anything. As far as my crickets I feed them joshs frogs cricket food and water gel. Before they are fed to the frog they are then tossed in Tree Frog Calcium Plus. Can feeding them too much or a big cricket cause this to happen as well?

In my experience, some frogs prolapse for a couple of reasons as well as parsite realated issues.. 1 being how clean is the cage,2 being the cricket is to large for the animal (in which the space between the frogs eyes should determine the size of the cricket), 3 temps are to low and the animal cannot digest it (mid 70's during the day is perfect), 3 too much calcium carbonate can cause intestinal blockage..

Just a thought and hopefully something helps you out..

His living area stays really clean. I spot clean the feces when I see them. Change substrate when its needed. I pretty much do daily spot cleaning and clean it on the weekends. My temps during the day range form 75-78 and the night temps are 71-73.
Maybe the size of the cricket was just a little big....I remember seeing him go potty and boy was the poop BIG. You mention too much calcium.... I usually feed the crickets the Joshs Frogs which is supposed to supply them with some calcium. Should I be dusting crickets with calcium supplements EVERY OTHER feeding? Well I woke up this morning to a lovely string of calls from my RETF. He seems VERY happy and looks beautiful in color. He was very active last night. He was pouncing around everywhere and scouting for food.
