Make sure that the substrate isn't too dry - a little moisture will encourage him to come out. Also keep in mind that Bufo species toads are nocturnal. Once they tame down a bit, they will often be out during the day too, but it's early days.

My toad seems to have gotten settled. He is now leaving his burrow open so he can come out every night.
