Feeding a Burrowed Toad

Hello all,

Your toad care article has been very informative. I just caught a wild toad. I have put him in a 20 gallon tank with 2-3 inches of coconut husk. He has some live plants, rocks, and a hollow log. He seems pretty happy with the whole set up.
The first day I got him I fed him 3 worms which he ate right away. Then he dug a hole and buried himself. Its been 3 days and he hasnt come out yet. Is he going to come out when he wants more food? Do I just wait until he is out of his hole and then add food? Or do I add food to get him to come out? Hes not going to starve down there right?

The way I feed my toads is I put a batch of crickets in the habitat with food and water crystals under a piece of bark or egg crate for the crickets, and the toads can come out of their burrows and eat when they feel like it.

Make sure that the substrate isn't too dry - a little moisture will encourage him to come out. Also keep in mind that Bufo species toads are nocturnal. Once they tame down a bit, they will often be out during the day too, but it's early days.

My toad seems to have gotten settled. He is now leaving his burrow open so he can come out every night.
