I think since you've only had your frog for a week give her more time to settle in. I would agree to have her checked for parasites when you get a chance it definately wouldn't hurt. Also my older Red Eye is a lot more active now that I have added a couple of tank mates. Of course depending on your tank size having other frogs bouncing around makes them feel more at home. Its also more entertaining for you. Frogs aren't terribly active pets anyways so if you increase their numbers you have better odds of seeing at least one moving around at night when you're watching. And being nocturnal keep it real dark for her and I bet you'll start to see her move around more at night. If they're in a high traffic room sometimes they're nervous to venture out of their hides. In the wild, due to a frogs small size, they are on the dinner list of a lot of predators so your frog may doing what she feels is safest...staying put. Give her time to realize there are no predators around and she'll start to come out of her shell. The fact that she's eating and pooping is a good sign. Feed her in her own terraium where she can be the hunter and sit back a enjoy watching her.
Well I just thought I would give everyone a little update on my Jadey. I tried feeding her crickets last night and she wanted nothing to do with them. I put her in a feeding tank that's about 6x6x6 with a few crickets and she was acctually trying to get away from them. As if she were affraid. They were jumping all over her and I was worried they would bite and hurt her so I took her out, tears rolling down my cheeks. =( I felt so bad. And now I'm at a loss of what to do. Should I try taking their legs off? Or buy dead ones? =/ But on a good note, I cleaned her tank and she became very acctive that night. I found her on the wall of her terrarium this morning and I was so happy. It was a first. =) Any comments? (p.s. sorry no pics yet... Soon though!!) Thanks!![]()
I'm glad she's up on the wall some now. When White's burrow, it's usually a humidity thing. Increase it. But it may be fine now.
how big is your White's? If it's an adult, she may not be hungry. My adult White's eat every other or every two days and are happy. If it's a juvenile, are you sure the crickets are not too big for her?
Well the humidity is always very high. Usually between 80 and 90 percent. She is about an inch and a half long but is still slim. She isn't "dumpy" yet. So I bought her the pin head crickets. I figured they would be ok since she eats the meal worms just fine. That's why I'm confused. Will they eat dead crickets? I feel like she wont. That's why I thought I would take the legs off of live ones. So at least they would still be moving a little bit. Otherwise I don't think it will keep her interest. I could be wrong though. I'm not sure.![]()
Most frogs won't touch dead crickets. Just because the frog hasn't touched them doesn't mean that something is necessarily wrong. It seems to me if some amphibians and reptiles get use to one food item, they get stuck on it. It's hard to get them back on crickets. So it may just take a little bit of time. Also, the frog may still be getting use to you.
How is the poop now? Still runny? Are you still finding some? I would suggest, as Jace did earlier, to get her checked out by a vet. It's never a bad idea, even if it's a healthy frog. They can do a fecal examination and make sure there are no parasites.
Hi, most frogs only go for live, moving targets.
You could try putting in only a couple crickets with your frog at a time so there's less going on at a time, or you could try giving them a little chill beforehand to slow them down. I've chilled 1/2" or so crickets in the freezer for 30 seconds before placing them in front of a frog. They start moving slowly after a minute or so, and are then easy pickings.
I'm not sure how much cold a pinhead can tolerate as I've never chilled one, I'd expect less than 30 sec of freezing, but it might be worth trying to get your frog used to catching crickets (and much easier than manually crippling each cricket!!)
