Green frog in the yard

I think this if Fiona, I found her next to the steps from my deck and almost stepped on her. I am not sure if this is Fiona or Shrek can anyone tell me if this is a male or female definately? They are some good pics and when she strched out I measured her at more than 1 foot!

Beautiful frog! As for the sexing, i think you can tell by the eardrum...if it is the same size or smaller than the eye, then it is a female; if it is bigger than the eye, it is male. In your photos, theyn look close to the same size, so...female?? Tentative guess only. Either way, gorgeous frog!

In the first pic, the ear drum looks bigger....sigh. I have no idea. Hopefully someone else has a clue, because I can't seem to make up my mind!!

As well as the eardrum size compared to the eye, males have a flat overhang on the top of their eardrum.

He/she is definately a Northern Green Frog. We are over run in this community with them, they get to be really, really large. I saw one by the lake that was about the same size as a football, just shaped differently. I also have a dozen or so in the pool now. I saw this one last pm & didn't think to check it's throat for yellowing so I had to rely on the eardrum eye ratio, but like some have mentioned, it's not as easy as it sounds. She/he is sitting in the middle of the pool and the throat looks yellow...humm. Jury is still out on this one!

Yea, now that I enlarged the pics I see it's a green frog. I'm still saying male though, females just don't get eardrums that big. Look it up on Google.

Looking closely at the pics and images online, I have to agree with TJ-I change my guess to male!1 Thanks for the info, TJ....I might bug you to help me sex my American Bullfrog when it is big enough. Not knowing is bugging me to no end!!

Lol, sure I'll help. With bullfrogs, its easy to tell the sex, even from a juvenile age.

Male green frog, Lithobates clamitans melanota. Something has been bothering for a little while now, why do you keep on calling it a northern green frog? There are two subspecies of L. clamitans, melanota AKA the green frog and clamitans AKA the bronze frog.

Humm..Good question Kurt. I'm getting my frogs confused. We have so many hopping around, my yard at night is alive, it's hard for a newbe like myself to commit all to memory. I haven't looked up many of the frogs in this area for a year or 2 since I found/noticed them. When I find a new frog, snake, bird, etc. I look it up and learn as much as I can about them. The only frog I've recently looked up is the Gray Tree frog because they bred in my pool, took over my yard and now I have them as pets.
Thanks for the id, this must be shrek then. When I sit on my deck I can hear hopping under it. I have seen several green frogs under there, but the larger ones aren't in the pool during the day, at least. Is this possible, that they can stay for long periods under the deck? I read that they will eat pretty much anything that they can get in their mouth, even mice, and I have seen them under there.

Aahhh..I think I know where the Northern came from. When the GTF were tads in the pool we had a snake in there too. When I looked it up it was a Northern Water Snake. The site said it feeds on tads, I have since caught and released into the lake across the street. It was around this time, my parents tell me, that I began calling the green frogs, northern green frogs. Mystery solved and correction noted : ).

Lord I am loosing it..I have no idea where I got the American Green Tree Frog from. Please disreguard that .. it's suppose to be the Grey Treen frog. I am not getting enough sleep and it's showing!!LOL
