I am extreamly unhappy right now... I just got home from a 2 day vacation @ a friends house had a great time while I was there.... & when I got home and checked on my animals. I noticed a strange smell comming from my frog tank, I looked around inside and there was my female in the water bowl, dead =(
I said "NO" & "OMG" 2 hundred times... and I pulled out the waterbowl to clean it out & do my eyes decieve me, nope.. I found my male sitting in the dirt, decomposing.... ****! (Please forgive my language)
I was gone 2 damn days and I lost 2 frogs,
What the damn????????
My little grey boy seems to be ok, he was posted up in the pothos plant. still breathing, thank the lord above....
What should I do???
Should I wait to get more & see if little grey boy makes it, or should I qaurentine him in his own little plastic tub tank?? & get him out of that enclosure
These 2 would be the 3rd ones I've lost, 3 gtfs in total,
I don't get it.. my heat is ok, my humdity doesn't get below 50% my water is treated with water conditioner & I feed them gut loaded crickets from a store,
I'm soo friggen sad right now.. ik knew this would happen, I can't do anything right!!
They did have red spots on there legs, more so on the male than the female, should I post pictures of the bodies??
Hi, Im so sorry for your loss.
Were these whites tree frog?
If I were you, I would definitely take the frog out of the enclosure and put him in a clean tank for quarantine. The I suggest you completely sterilize their home and throw out anything that cant be sterilized. Once the quarantine process is over then you can consider more frog companions for your wee boy.
Im sorry but i cant help you with diagnosis. A vet would be your best bet.
Once again im so sorry.
I agree. I would get him out of that tank immediately and into something sterile. Don't use any of the same plants or anything and get him checked out by a vet. I would completely gut the tank, discard those plants, thoroughly clean everything and start fresh. And also make sure he's going to make it before getting others.
So sorry for your babies. It sounds very odd that 2 passed within 2 days. Something is not right at all. I agree you should take the remaining frog out and clean that tank out thoroughly, there has got to be a reason for this to have happened and I would watch the remaining frog closely. I wish you the best and hope the remaining frog remains happy and healthy.
Some advice for the quarantine tank; I had to keep my sick frog in a quarantine tank for about two months. Here's my recommendation. For the substrate, use paper towels (unbleached "green" paper towels are what we used). Make sure to keep the paper towels moist. This makes it a lot easier to monitor such things as fecal droppings, crickets, etc. Additionally, it makes it a lot easier to keep the environment sterile, especially if your frog might be suffering from some kind of bacterial/fungal issue (which given your loss of the other two frogs in such a short amount of time seems highly likely).
As far as gutting the "permanent" tank, we also had to do the same thing in order to protect the other frog. From all my readings, this is what I found to work best. Remove everything (obviously). I agree, if you have live plants, I would toss those since you won't be able to sterilize them safely. As far as the tank/decorations, here is what we did. Oh, and I recommend wearing gloves while doing it.
1. We'd remove the items and do an initial spray down with very hot water to remove any loss debris. We'd then soak them in a very very very diluted bleach solution (remember, you have to be very careful because with some of the more porous decorations, the bleach can soak in and be hard to remove, and be dangerous for the frogs.) For example, we NEVER soak any actual wood items (like branches); for those, we "baked" them. You can search for instructions on that.
2. After removing the decorations from the diluted bleach bath, after about five minutes, we'd rinse them using boiling water, and let them dry.
3. For inside of the tank, we spray it down with a solution (WipeOut 2 - in the reptile section), let that sit, and then pour boiling water as a rinse, and wipe it down with paper towels.
I hope this helps, and I hope your little guy makes it. I know how heartbreaking it is to lose a frog, and I hope that you can figure out what caused it, both for your current frog, and future additions!
The vet will certainly be able to provide some answers for you!
You can sterilize live plants in a very mild bleach/water solution. Bake wood for an hour at around 150 - 200 degrees farenheit.

Thanks to all of you that have made suggestions & those who gave condolences....
I have taken the corpses of the 2 gtfs to a local vet trained with reptiles/amphibians,
They tested them and they did not have red leg, or any other diseases, they told me that they were very poorly taken care of the time they spent in the pet store, the male was emaciated & the female was very impacted.. i spent 130$ to make sure it wasn't worse than i thought...
I also took little gray boy with me to make sure he was ok, and they gave him a clean bill of health.. which made me very happy... they told me to just clean up some of the substrate. @ which i did, & to monitor him and to NOT buy from the store i got the 2 gtfs from... @ which I WILL NOT!
YAY![]()
I really hope everything works out with your little guy. Keep us posted on how he's doing.
Yes, please let us know how the remaining frog is doing.
I just want to say, additionally, cheers to you for going the distance to find out what might have caused your frogs' illness. I am so sorry to hear that it was caused by a circumstance out of your control, but glad to hear that your other frog has a great chance for a long life with a very caring owner!
