They weren't for sale. But saying "no longer for give away" didn't sound quiet right.

They didn't find new homes, they're staying with us. We've decided to look for a two bedroom apartment instead of a one bedroom so that I can have a room for all of my reptiles and amphibians. I didn't think wording would be such a big deal.
