 Frog/toad I.D. please.
 Frog/toad I.D. please.
When I went out to the lake, I almost stepped on this little frog. I scooped it up and stuck it in with some other frogs that were caught and when I went back to check on all of them realized that this one was definitely NOT like the others. I removed it and put it in a separate container to be photographed. The pics are not the best because it is very small, but it has interesting markings and the tips of all toes are yellow.

I was leaning towards toad, myself, but except for Fire Belly toads, I have never seen an actual toad. Not a native one, anyway. I've always wanted a toad....

I am looking in my frogs and toads of North America book trying to narrow it down. Could it be a Western Toad?? Common toad just sounds so boring...and my pets are anything but common!!

Never heard of that, but I really suck at the scientific names. Give me a second to look it up....

It doesn't look like the pics I found on the Net....but I know very little about different types of toads so I will rule nothing out!

I'm not the greatest on west coast US amphibians, but it does look like a Bufonid.

It definitely has a toad face. I am going to just go with Western Toad (from what I have read, that is a very diverse group of toads, so I am sure it will fit right in!). I am hoping once it gets bigger maybe a better or definitive I.D. can be made. I'm just happy it's a toad and appears to be healthy....

Thanks, Seth. I came to that conclusion myself. Now, just got to get it bigger-baby fingernail size is way to small for my comfort level. And to get him into the proper setup. And a name. The list never ends!
