Thread: New Toad haven.

    Default New Toad haven.

So I just got some dirt from my friends house since his dirt is rich in nutrients and is pesticide free. I got enough for my small 14inch longx8inch widex8inch tall kritter keeper. I bought the petco brand because its green in color I guess. Anywho. Theres this thing my grandma gave me. Its a soap dish thats a large brown frog with its mouth open. Its very pretty and nice looking. So I decided to clean it out with chlorine and then I took out any chlorine out of it. So after a while of doing this I took the moss that I had and I put it in a corner. Now the moss is very large and it looks like a bush. The toads like to sit on top of it. Its kinda tall. Like 4-5inches tall. I took a branch from my friends house and put it in the back as a passage way and just because it looks nice. So it lays on the back top of the moss and on the back top of the frog ornament which is 6-7inches tall. I got some river rocks and put them on the corner of the moss so it looks like its a bush on a cliff I guess? Next to that I put in a nice patch of clovers. It was growing on the bark my parents laid out. So I did them a favor. I cleaned it out. And put it next to that. I found this nice looking weed thats like a matt but not like moss because it also looks like clovers to an extent(hard to explain). So this is covering the outer exterior of the small dish. On the other part which is in between the dish and the clovers(the first one I mentioned) I put in a small patch of mat moss. I did the same near the ornament. In between the large moss and ornament I found this feed that looked like a crown or like a snake plant only green. So I put it in between that. On the very back corner in between the wall and the moss I found a tall weed that I put it there. I took half of it(I cut it in half) the other half is behind the frog ornament. So it doesnt look like theres anything missing(I like filling up nooks and cranies on tanks unless its a purposely made hide out). Inside the frog ornament which has a large gaping opening, which fits in a hand. I put in some river rocks so the toads can easily climb out should they get in and then I filled it up with clean water as a soaking bath. The first dish is shallow and this one is actually 2-3inches deep. The dish I use that is shallow is one of those plastic dishes that look like a rock that are sold with hermit crab kits? I used to have those kit so I threw out the kit and kept the dish. I wish I could post pictures. Its like a gem in myeyes I guess. :P So all in all I did a tank out of pesky weeds and moss. Do you think the weeds will need lighting?

Tip for having your post answered: don't post a wall of text. Paragraphs make posts so much easier to read and much less intimidating.

Most plants will need some daylight spectrum lighting on a regular basis in order to survive.

The one thing that strikes me about this setup is that it seems a bit on the small size.

Hi Kevin, no offense, but I heartily agree with John that a giant wall of text is a painful thing to slog through.

It looks like you've gathered a bunch of plants from various sources and rammed them in your enclosure. If you, and your toad, are happy with it, then it looks good to me (I know nuts about keeping toads though).

A daylight spectrum fluorescent spiral bulb will make many plants happy. Whatever lighting you use, I'd suggest you take careful notes on the conditions the plants are in, what kinds of plants they are (pictures/drawings and descriptions are fine, so long as you can ID it later), and how they do under these conditions. Do this consistently and you'll soon know which of your "weeds" are happy and which are killed off. Adjust your conditions or plantings accordingly for a happier enclosure.

A general tip for gathering outdoor plants for terrarium use- aim for plants growing in shade or part shade. A typical terrarium setup will kill any plant that requires full on sunlight to live.
