We've definitely had some "splashing" issues with our water side of the tank, but we've found ways to avoid it. One way we've used is to position moss along the sides. It's great at soaking up the "splashes" and helps to prevent a lot of water seeping down into the soil. Our soil remains fairly dry, and we just change out the moss every couple of days depending on how wet it is.

    In my experience
Moss needs moisture. But TOO much moisture can actually kill it. Brown moss is dead moss. Because everytime I soaked the moss TOO muchit died so thats alittle bit too much. unless its fake moss. Lol.

Nope, no fake moss. And haven't had any brown moss :P Course, again, our setup is different. We have a water side, so the glass insert might be catching a lot of the splashes since the water level is about an inch lower. Whatever the case though, we've definitely had a water side without drenched soil.

Actually, come to think of it, one good idea that you could use for one of those self-contained fountains is to buy one of the larger sitting ponds (you know, the ones that are about an inch in height), and put that underneath. That might catch a lot of the splashes, and give the frogs just another place to lounge.

We separated the bottom (sealing in a glass piece with non-toxic aquarium sealant) to make a water side. They love it! We have a version of this filter/waterfall system:

We just put rocks down on the bottom (so that they don't drawn), and floating plants, etc.

But you can buy a "self-contained" waterfall like this: http://www.exo-terra.com/en/products/waterfall.php

For that last one, you still might want to get a static water holder, just so that he has a little more room to relax. As far as substrate, we use T-Rex Jungle Bed. It's nice and soft for them, and small enough that if they get messy eating (which they inevitably do), there is no fear of impaction.

We use the same light setup as Julia. Anyways, I hope that helps!!! What a great present to get for an anniversary. I think I'm going to "casually" leave your post up in my browser for my fiance to read and see if it gives him some ideas for our next anniversary ; ) HAHA!

yes the self contained ones i was looking at them in the store today..and thought that is such a small spot down in the bottom, but i want to find a way to enlarge that spot..like find a shallow larger thing to attach to the bottom so they have a place to lounge.

and im planning to do..a layer of hydroballs, mesh screen, then eco earth, then live moss with some large river rocks. (:

hahahaha thats hilarious!!! do it do it!

Which is what will happen with a "self containing waterfall". Assumming your talking about pre-designed ones like zoo meds and such. Its falling water which splosches down onto the place where the water goes back up. Again some water may and probably will end up in the soil. I actually did a waterfall once. Where I had sealed off a section for the land area. But the water kept splashing into the soil. then going back onto the basin when it was drenched. Just passing on what i think and was warned about.
thankyou for your opinion and your story..i can see how it would be a problem.

i have a question..what is a static water holder? igbykibbets mentioned i should get one to extend the room the frog(s) would have for lounging..and where would i find one?

Oh, what I meant was one of the more shallow water dishes! :P Something like this:

    http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/2510/product.web

What I thought was that you could find one large enough (just saw some that were really large at a reptile expo) to put underneath the waterfall as a sort of dish to catch the water.

I think the concern would be if the frog(s) were young enough, they might be able to squeeze behind the waterfall through the space that would be creating by moving the waterfall slightly away from the corner because of the dish.

    Hope that helps!

oh ok i understand what you mean now..i didnt quite get it before but i understand now. if i do decide to get a waterfall unit ill deffinately check that out...

soo..since i got the cork background they said if i used a small pump i could run a tub up the back of the background and make a hole in it so the tube could pump out water..if i did that..would i need a little basin of rocks under the place that the water was falling down? like trickeling down the cork and onto a pile of rocks? would it just run down thru the soil/cocoa husks and hydroballs and be sucked back up again just like that?
