I have a 70 Gallon naturalistic bioactive paludarium set up for "Fred". He's about 4/5 year old male bullfrog. He moved into a pond I had at my apartment 4 years ago and when we moved into a house last November, I knew I couldn't leave him behind. He had gone into hibernation already and it was a temporary 20 Gallon pond outside my front door. Knowing they would pull it out the minute they rented it back out and he would be left with nowhere to go in 20F degree weather, I dug him out and moved him into a temporary 29 gallon paludarium in my basement. I finally finished his new home about a month ago and moved him upstairs into his new digs.
This is where my questions begin. For those that have kept these frogs before, they are big powerful animals and make a mess of things real quick. (All the aquatic plants I gave a months to establish roots were uprooted within a day, terrestrial plants floating everywhere, moss ripped from bark - full on destruction, but I anticipated this)
What surprises me is what almost seems to be his "nesting" behavior. I wake in the morning to find plants moved. When I move them back to their original positions, I find them back where he wants them the next day. Specifically in the terrestrial area he like to hide. He almost seems to be building his favorite hide up.
Has anyone with experience keeping American bullfrogs had a similar experience with them "engineering" their enclosures in similar ways?
