I've been told before that you can set up a false bottom with an under gravel filter underneath to keep it frog getting smelly and keep it cleaner, does anyone know how to set it up exactly? I don't want to try to figure it out myself and end up having to completely re-do it lol
I have a few false bottoms and none of them smell at all. Well, thats not entirely true. They smell like greenhouses.
how do you make a false bottom though, i mean i get the concept just not sure of the materials
John discusses here Dart Frog Terrarium Building and I here Red-Eyed Leaf Frog.
I am using a small filter underneath my false bottom. It may be overkill but I had an extra one lying around so I figured it couldn't hurt. It is on my first viv that was just set up today, so I can't comment on it's necessity.
i dont understand what a filter would do for ur false bottom? Where do u filter the water to? Isnt the false bottom supposed to just keep your soil out of the water? Once u get enuf water down there, you drain it out..... its basically waste water imo. I throw mine away at least. I dont know how u would incorporate a filter into that process, unless u were then pumping the water into or thru a water feature or something?
the water under my FB does feed a waterfall. there is a small pool at the base of the waterfall which my treefrog will have access to for soaking. i have 20 years experience in freshwater(FW), FW planted and saltwater aquariums so i think a bit of my thought process for the filter stems from that. maybe overkill? at least it gives me piece of mind.
well if its pumping up to a water fall, then it makes perfect sense! I just had never heard of anyone making a false bottom and using a filter just to clean out the water
