John, thanks a lot for a very clear and concise description of how to build a viv. I have a couple of questions though...forgive me should I sound incredibly ignorant or stupid, which I am at this stage as I have no experience as far as viv building is concerned.
1. You've mentioned LECA as a preferred first layer / medium, I've looked at various hardware stores here in South Africa and it seems as if no one here know it. This got me to wonder about alternatives, instead of the heavy gravel. Thus, what are your opinion about using the plastic cubes sold by pet shops as an aquarium filter media? This is very lightweight, inhibits the growth of good bacteria and if covered with mesh should maybe do the same as the LECA?
2. In the vivs as you've shown here; how often do you do gardening? It just dawned on me today that surely these plants will grow and bromeliads can become fairly large plants, the same goes for pothos?
3. Do you replace the soil in your viv periodically, or do you feed the plants at all? As surely some of the plants will need feeding? If you feed them, with what do feed them as obviously we wouldn't want to harm the frogs?
4. You've also mentioned that you introduced springtails to the soil, do you also include earthworms to the soil? If not, any particular reasons?
That's a wrap for now, hope to get your inputs on this real soon - your vivs do look stunning!
