Hello, I'm new here
I have wanted to keep a tree frog or two for some time now, and I just found a little gray tree frog (green colored and small, so probably a juvenile?) outside that I'm thinking about keeping. I have a 10 gallon tank with a wire mesh lid that I can house him in. If I wanted to collect more frogs though, how many could I keep in this size tank? And can I keep just one, or do they enjoy company?
I've also been looking at the small terrarium by Zoo Med with dimensions of 12"x12"x12". Would this be large enough for gray tree frogs, and if so, how many could comfortably live in there?
Thanks in advance for the help, and I'm sure I'll be posting more questions as I go. I have already read through the gray tree frog care sheet and found it very helpful!

Congrats on the new froggy, I too have a new gray tree frog in a 10 gal...about to make it vertical for more height for the little guy, I am new to this but I would have to say I wouldn't put more than 2 in that size...maybe someone else thinks differently though...also they will tell you religiously not to combine a new froggy without quarantining him first to check for parasitesgotta check the poo...lol
Thanks for the reply! Two sounds like a good number in a 10g tank. I actually have a spare 29g tank that I'm considering using, but I haven't decided yet. I guess I could keep a good number of frogs in there if I wanted to.
With the 29g tank, could I make it a planted terrarium with real plants and just keep a couple of frogs so that it would be (sort of) like a closed system where the plants and soil take care of the waste? Or would I still need to replace the substrate every couple of weeks to clean out the waste?
I have real plants in mine...not sure about having to change the substrate, I use organic soil so I guess that answer would benefit me as well...LOL, with having live plants not sure how well they would get along if you had to change the soil so much.
Hi, welcome aboard. The 12" cube would be a little tight for more than one gray treefrog, the 29 would be much better and you could keep a few of them in there. Live plants would be good and with them you never really have to change the substrate.
Congrats on becoming a frogger. I love grey tree frogs. Two frogs in smaller tank is fine. I put in a layer of rocks, layer of coco fiber, layer of bark chips and then place smooth river rocks and a piece of wood, plus some plants. I buy tropical plants at a local nursery and wash them off, potting soil and all. Native frogs are a little more tolerant of their environment. I pour declor water up to level of rocks, let it set for a couple of hours and then refll it. Handle them as little as possible. Tiny froglets need to be picked up in a tiny plastic container when moved. Or on the twig they are clinging too. They leave their setup alone except for spraying to keep the humidity about 75%.
Thanks for the helpful replies! Last night I decided to put the frog back outside where we found himI still would love to keep Gray Tree Frogs sometime in the future, but I felt too bad for him sitting in the temporary tupperware container until I got a real tank set up for him. And he didn't seem happy, so I just let him back outside. Maybe I will find another one sometime, but I think I want to set up the tank before getting a frog.
I hope you are able to get set up soon!
