    Default best calcium powder

    Hi

I have been using repashy calcium plus as a dust for my geckos/toads and I'm overly impressed with it however I am not a fan of how it must be refrigerated and only lasts 6 months before it is no longer fresh (info from emailing repashy). Is there an all in one dust that has multivitamins and calcium with d3 that is readily available and safe for my pets

    thanks

I use Repashy Calcium Plus exclusively, and have since they released it many years ago. In my opinion, there's no substitute. Everything else is either inferior or not as sticky. I too find it annoying that it has to be replaced regularly but I also find it reassuring that my frogs and salamanders are getting the correct nutrients. The issue is mainly due to exposing the vitamins to the calcium and other mineral dusts - they hasten the breakdown of the other compounds in the presence of oxygen and water. What I do is I buy the smallest tub of Repashy (3 oz I think?) and I write the opening date on the lid with permanent marker. I throw any remnant away after about 6 months. I don't refrigerate it but I also don't keep it in a warm room. The main benefit you're getting from calcium plus is the calcium itself, and the calcium content won't change, even if the concentration of the organic compounds (vitamins, pigments, etc) in the dust decrease over time. So you could use it as just a calcium and mineral supplement indefinitely.

I have had more success with the Mazuri Better Bug Gutload. It has put healthy weight on my amphibians. It has outperformed the Repashy and I was recommended by my vet who showed me a study and by Herpetologist Frank Indiviglio

Repashy Calcium Plus is not a gutload, it's a dusting supplement - completely different thing. You're comparing apples and oranges. Personally, I use an organic chinchilla food as my cricket gutload.

You don't need the supplement if you use the Mazuri Gutload. Even though it's not a supplement it provides everything the amphibians need. It does work best for the native species but I've seen improvement in a skink and White's Tree Frog as well. I know other then the Mazuri chicken food is good to feed the insects.

I have no doubt that your gutload meets your needs - my gutload meets mine. However, my own experience has been that calcium dusting is necessary for many species of amphibian to avoid metabolic bone disease.

I'm not disputing you I used to use Repashy as a supplement but it wasn't providing what my toads and gray tree frogs specifically needed. There's nothing wrong with using both. I'm not trying to advertise for this brand I had no idea they existed until this past January. I've seen some incredible progress happen that saved my toads lives specifically. That's why I try to encourage people to use it.
