    Default American Toads Basking:

I've never read, or heard about Eastern American Toads basking, but my two have taken up the hobby. Ever since I got the Zoomed LED + reptisun bulbs (before I just had a reptisun fluoro), my toads have been sitting on their hide log or up in plants that appears to be to get closer to the light. I like it. They were always usually out during the day, but now they are really out! Anyone else see or hear of american toads showing this behavior?

    Hi there,

My toads do this sometimes although I am not sure if they are truly "basking" but they seem to know if I plan on feeding them and will stare at me when I am moving around in the room.

If you use UVB the toads will sit under that too to try to metabolize the nutrients. If you don't have a UVB light if you can get one and experiment to see if your toads are trying to get UVB rays.

I've always used UVB fluoros, I have added an additional one plus LED. Maybe it is the extra UVB, but seems plausible it is the extra warmth too. I feed them in the evening and they also get excited and come to the front when they know it is feeding time. This behavior is just a relaxed resting during the day behavior. It is interesting and well received why ever they have started to do it.

No as long as they are getting enough calcium + d3 supplementation

This is never a guarantee though. It might as well be a necessity because it can help the toads get more out of the UVB and if they are Ill this can really help to make the recovery faster. I've also found that the Mazuri Gut Load is the best for these toads
