Saved a treefrog today

Found this guy on the floor at work all dried up and covered in carpet fibers. I didn't think it was still alive but when I picked it up to see what kind of frogs it was it moved it's arms alittle though it's eyes remain closed. First thing I did was pulled off the few pieces of carpet I could off it and placed it in a plastic cup with wet paper towels soaked with drinking water. When I checked up it on an hour later it had rehydrated itself and amazingly had shed it's old skins along with any remaining carpet fibers on it.

I was a bit thrown by this initially. Using my moderator powers, I was able to discover what state you're from. Assuming that's a native frog, it has to be a Gray Tree Frog, but its markings are unusual (not the color, the markings).

When I first found it it was about half the size it is now so it's recovering quite well.

I might just keep it since I almost bought a few gray tree frogs last weekend at the show but decided to go with the pacman instead.

I was a bit thrown by this initially. Using my moderator powers, I was able to discover what state you're from. Assuming that's a native frog, it has to be a Gray Tree Frog, but its markings are unusual (not the color, the markings).

I'm pretty sure it's a native specie. BTW it is still quite small, maybe I take a few pix of it next to a penny for size reference later.

Here's a picture I just took. After picture was taken it jumped out as I was reaching in to take out the penny. Good thing it didn't have a far fall.



BTW it is eating great. Didn't feed it much, just two crickets yesterday and two today.

After a little research I believe it's a Cope's gray tree frog. Cope's gray tree frogs have smooth skin while Grays are rough.

I really don;t think this is a gray treefrog. I believe it to be the federally protected Hyla andersonii or pine barrens treefrog.

Thanks for picture, very beautiful frog. The thing is I live in Minnesota and we don't have those frogs here. Pine barrens treefrog have white border strip on the side and frog I saved doesn't.

Kurt, I had already discounted Pine Barrens tree frog - the markings are wrong if you look carefully. The skin texture is off too. It has to be a Gray Tree Frog. Juveniles are often bright green like this for much of the time.

With the knowledge that the frog was found in Minnesota, I have to concur with you John, it has to be a gray treefrog. I wasn't 100% sure in my ID, more like 89%. I was thrown off by the markings and the fact there was no white patch under the frog's eye.

Now if you excuse me, I have egg to wash off of my face.

I have had more than 1K Gray Tree froglets in my yard that had been hatched in my pool . I have seen every variation of these guys you could imagine and it is similar for sure, but none of the ones I've seen have the green on their legs. All have had stripes and no solid green at all. Your frog is quite the enigma, but very cute and beautifully colored. Last week I rescued a praying mantus from Walmart and a Cadidid. I brought them home and released them in my yard in the woods. An employee said a student from the High school next door brought a frog in the store and let it loose for a laugh. It died. I let them know if it happens again call me and I will come get it. People can be so cruel.

I was looking at some of my old pics of Gray Tree froglets and looked at a few that are still in my yard. Some actually do have quite a bit of green on their legs, but with the stripes, not solid, and not as green as their backs. I just wanted to update my last post
