I'm thinking about breeding crickets. But I was wondering, do they smell bad???
Yes...many people keep them in a garage or closet. Just make sure to keep them in a container they can't climb out of and it has a lid. That should help keep the smell contained a little.
I don't think they smell all that bad.
It's all relative....next to a big dog poop... it doesn't smell that bad....next to a decaying dead rat.... it doesn't smell that bad.....next to spring fresh flowers...they smell pretty bad....It's all relative.
Crickets do have a sickly sweet smell which is tolerable if the crickets are kept on clean vermiculite and have very good ventilation. I have several tubs of crickets in my house and have not noticed any problem with smell. It's like the cat box; keep it clean and the smell is no big deal.
It's the dead ones that really cause the stench. They aren't bad otherwise.
I keep my crickets on paper towels...once a day I change the paper towels and throw away and replace fruit and veggies daily. I found keeping the crickets on coco husk was smelly. The dead crickets are the ones that stink...and it was too hard/time consuming picking dead bugs out of the dirt. Paper towels are the way to go!
