Cientific name: Chaunus schneideri/ Bufo paracnemis
Characteristics:
Robust body with a broad head. Triangular snout, huge patotoid glands. Prominent cephalic crests. Horizontal pupil. Large paracnemis glands on the tibia. The dorsum is rough, greyish and yellowish in colour with some transverse blotches. the belly is creamy with dark speckles and blotches.
Habits and Habitat:
In winter in groups of 6 to 12 in old ants' nests; summer near water, sometimes inactive and in silent groups.
Reproduction:
In spring and summer. Its eggare in a large gelatin like strings 4 or 5 metrres long which adhere to aquatic plants and at the surface.
Foods:
Feeds on beetles, mayflies and small vertebrates.
Voice:
Like Chaunus arenarum but deeper and louder.
Size: 21 cm
