Hello all,
My wife and I have become proud parents of 2 Suriname Clown tree frogs, they are doing great but we've been looking to get two more for our 18X18X24 vivarium. We are having difficulty in finding "Clown tree frogs" the confusion we have is that we've seen Hourglass tree frogs listed stating they are also known as clown tree frogs. The scientific names don't match so to me they are not Clown tree frogs. Can anyone help to clarify our dilemma?
Thank you
The genus dendropsophus contains 95 species many of which are labeled as clown treefrogs. Hourglass frogs D. Ebraccatus are one species which I’m sure you already figured out. It may be hard to find the same species you already have especially if they were from import. I’ve seen different species for sale labeled as clowns but fortunately their care is generally the same.
Thanks Dan, would you be of the opinion that they could be safely introduced with our existing Clowns? Everything we've seen is to not introduce different species due to toxins they produce. Hence our confusion. We would love to add to our little group.
Since they are of the same genus and generally have the same care requirements it would probably be doable. I’m a firm believer in housing species separately but in this case I think you’d have success. I would recommend a quarantine period though just to be safe.
Thank you for your advice.
