I’ll go through the steps in my builds from start to finish for you:
1. Layer of leca clay balls for drainage (2-4 inches)
2. cover drainage layer with substrate barrier (I use fine vinyl window screen)
3. Add ABG mix substrate
A. scatter some activated charcoal on the substrate barrier
B. Add mix of coco fiber, sphagnum moss tree, fern fiber
C. Top with leaf litter (magnolia or live oak)
4. Add microfauna and let it cycle for two weeks
I maintain a master springtail culture so I add from it. You can’t over do it with them. add some fish food flakes under the leaf litter when you first introduce them to feed on while they establish and you should be set. It is wise to pick up a master culture of springtails for future use if needed.
