Hi! I wanted to utilize my 55 Gallon long tank that I have for Phyllobates (can be terribilis, BiColor, etc.)...but I was wondering how many minimum AND maximum should ideally go in this size tank FOR EACH PARTICULAR SPECIES (example: " I would put minimum 2 and maximum 4 Terribilis, OR Min 3 and max 5 Bicolor, etc..). THE TANK: Approx 48"L x 14"D x 18" H. Modified glass top with little ventilation and misting nozzle setup. Drainage layer and background (subtle but nice) already set up, but nothing else set up YET. I DO NOT NEED SETUP ADVICE, unless you want to include opinions (don't mind reading if you have time). More want to get to how many MIN-MAX for each species. Please let me know what you think, and thank you for reading!
You could probably keep up to 5 of either in a 55. The phylobates species tend to be almost social so they’ll pal around together. Just remember that 5 frogs produce a lot of poop so you may want to max out at 4. The 55s have less floor space than they seem.
Technically you could keep one adult as a minimum I guess. Is your goal to breed? If so 4 in a 55 should do the trick.
.
Male heavy grouping seems to work the best although phylobates are a bit more forgiving. Really all you need is one male and one female in the mood and you’ll have tadpoles. They’re probably the best group dart frog. Other species such as tincs are best typcally kept with one female as they will fight, eat other female eggs and stress the males.
