I think my Male Pyxie is one of the most picky frogs I have ever come across. He won't eat nightcrawlers, and he won't eat superworms. He will only eat crickets and occasionally a mouse. But only eating crickets isn't the worst part. He will only eat the crickets in his water dish. He is unbelievably picky!
Gotta love a frog with personality! My one male, Kadesh, gets unburied to feed and then buries himself for a couple of weeks at a time. We know he's still there because you can see his water dish move and get lopsided. At least you can SEE your male-I have a wonderful tank of....dirt. LOL.
Lol, my male is the exact opposite of kadesh. My male would spend all of his time in his water dish if I didn't have to change it every other day, which is why I'm going to split the tank 50/50 and have a filter running. I think it is because of the way he was raised. He was raised in wet moss, so he spends too much time in his water.
Hey TJ,
Is your frog getting warm enough? And how long are you going between feedings? I use to feed mine in their cage but have started taking them out and feeding in a tub, so that they will not get any eco earth with each bite. They can even sit there in the tub and go after mealworms as they move across the bottom.
The girl I got from you is kinda picky and does not want to eat very much at a time, but she is getting better and eating more all the time. Oh, her name is Cleo.
Cheers,
When I first got Gherkin, he spent all his time in the water dish-a solid 10 days. He was previously kept in a bathtub and was dehydrated and underfed, so who can blame him? Now, he is plump and laid back. He digs a hole but never buries himself and will eat anything, though if it is small, he ignores it. Being blind in one eye doesn't help either. I feed all three of mine in a separate feeding tub, too.
Jeff, would you be able to post pics of Cleo? I am glad to hear she is doing well with you. When do you plan on starting to breed them?
Hi Jo-anna, I will have to put up an album with just my pixies. They are all doing very well.
Breeding, hmmm ... as soon as I feel they are ready. I am currently putting together all the data I can find. And need to start laying out a plan for the aestivation, feeding, Florida rainy season in the spring, set of breeding, set up for the tadpoles, set up for juvenile frogs, etc. Then as long as they are mature enough, then we will see.![]()
Sounds great Jeff! My male pyxie's tank stays at 81 degrees Fahrenheit all the time because of the heat mat and the cover on the lid. I am going to start feeding him in a tub even though he doesn't like feeding out of his water dish, but he'll have to get used to it. About Cleo, good name, I find it so funny because at my house she would eat anything, and a lot of it! Glad to hear she is adjusting well to her new home! I'll keep my fingers crossed for the breeding, if you're successful, please make sure to tell me so I can come and see the tadpoles!
