    Default Anyone in BC CANADA?

There is this is a pet store in a mall that is keeping a pixie frog in a cricket keeper with about 2 cm of dirt and no water dish. The frog is only about 2-3 inches long and about 3-4 inches wide. Any one in the Burnaby/Vancouver area who has a big heart should check him out. My husband had to basically drag me out of the store...I wanted to buy him and give him an appropriate home.

He does not look like he has been there long (which is good) I think there is hope of saving this little guy. PM me if you want the name of the store.

There were also some firebelly toads but they looked beyond saving....

I placed an add on craigslist and had a few people respond and told me they would go have a look. If he is not sold in a few days then I think I will call the local SPCA (Society for the Prevention of of Cruelty to Animals.) Im not sure if they will do anything for a frog...but its worth a try.

The frog was not labeled or priced...

Hopefully someone can get it and give it a good home. If I had a way down there, I would definitely get it. ABFs are my favourite and the thought that it was in poor conditions made it hard to sleep last night.

So my husband could see that this was really bothering me, so he agreed to let me go back and get the frog!!!! Yesterday I could only see the back half and assumed it was a pixie.

Today the people working there responded really well when I explained that this frog and the pacman they had NEED WATER DISHES. They immediately went and put some in their enclosures. They justified not having water by saying they dump a bunch of water on the dirt daily. I explained how this was not the best idea because bacteria would grow quickly on extra soggy soil. Especially because the area where they were kept was very warm.

Anyways I asked to see the "pixie" and as soon as I saw his front end I realized this is NOT a pixie! He was so dry that it was like touching a bearded dragon. I asked for a dish of water and submerged the frog. He was so weak he would not hold his head out of the water so I held it for him. His face and back were covered in dry dirt and dead crickets so I used my finger to wipe his face clean. The frog could not open his eyes.

After a few minutes of wiping his face and hold up his head his skin split and he began to shed...thats when he opened his eyes for the first time...and started moving his limbs.

I spoke with the manager and explained the frogs poor condition. He told me he got this frog from another store that had recently closed down. They had no information on its history or even what species it is. The "reptile expert" who was not in (good thing or I would have been really stern with him) said it was a pixie. I informed him that it looked more like a Budgetts frog which from what little i know about them...are semi aquatic. This poor frog!!!!

Anyways after talking the manager he said it sounded like i knew a lot more then anyone working in the store, and i could have it for $20. Im not sure what they are worth but I am happy I did not have to pay an arm and a leg to get a sick frog. (Whites Tree frogs cost $50-60 where I live so that should give you an idea on how cheap he was.

I am off to research and set up a habitat...any tips or advice would be helpful. When he is settled tonight I will post pics to confirm that he really is a budgetts frog.

Way to go Julie! I'm glad that you were able to get it and I know it is now in great hands. A Budgett's frog is on my wish list, so I hope you post lots of pics of it and let us know about your experience.

Thanks everyone! On the scale of things I know this is only one little frog...but I have always said that if I get rich and win the lottery I would open up a reptile refuge. A girl can dream right? :P
