Thread: How to Hibernate Toadlets/Baby Toads? (food concerns)

Default How to Hibernate Toadlets/Baby Toads? (food concerns)

I have a pet toadlet/baby toad (about 3–4 months since metamorphosis). I think it is a female American Toad, but it might be a Fowler's Toad or be a male. It is getting colder and I think I should hibernate it. I've read that you should stop feeding toads a week before hibernation to clear their guts of undigested food, but whenever I try to stop feeding it for more than two days, it becomes skinny quickly. I don't know if this is just normal for young toads—I've read that you need to feed toadlets every day but adult toads a few times a week—or if something is wrong. But my main question is how do I hibernate my toadlet while ensuring that it has enough fat to make it through the winter?

If possible I suggest trying to keep it warm during the winter, at least if it's in a tank. Even under ideal conditions hibernation can be risky. With a young toad it might be fatal.

I would strongly advise against doing so. Unless you are intending to breed the following season, there is usually no valid reason to hibernate most amphibians. It is unnecessary, and exposes the toad to new risks- namely, death, which is a possibility even if you do everything right.
Why do you feel like it should hibernate?

I've tried raising bugs and worms before I got my toad, and they always die in the winter. I don't know why! I have heating in my house. I guess I wasn't thinking carefully when I got my toad (I'll never make that mistake again!) and suspect it will happen again and need a way to either feed my toad or hibernate it while I try to replenish my bugs.

Many pet shops carry feeder insects year round. You could also try culturing your own insects- dubia are fairly easy. Mealworms and super worms are easy too, although should be supplemented with crickets or dubia. You could order earthworms online (European nightcrawlers would be my suggestion, NOT red wigglers) and they last quite a while.

If worst comes to worst and you have no nearby pet stores, and bait shops don't carry bait in winter, I've sometimes seen Wal-Mart stock nightcrawlers in refrigerator bins in winter. You'd have to cut them down to size which is gross but it works. Or you could order bugs online. I keep dubias in a plastic storage container (with a secure lid and with mesh hot glued to a hole in the top.

Maybe I can try raising earthworms again. Would it be okay to dig them from the soil around my house or would they have diseases/parasites?
