Thread: Safety of Acrylic silicone?

    Default Safety of Acrylic silicone?

    Hello guys.
So i made some backgrounds and side out of plywood, foam and "acrylic mastic" which is something like silicone, but can be painted and easier to remove of hands. This will be for my pacman frog.
So i would like to know if you guys believe that this can be in any way toxic? It is rated A+ in gas emissions and smell, which is none.
    Here are some pictures.

What do you guys think? After a couple of washes should be good no?
Or should i cover it with some normal 100% silicone instead?
If you'd like i can post some pictures of the acrylic mastic itself.
    Thanks.

Honestly, I don't think the problem would be toxins(not 100% sure), but I think acrylic caulk type products deteriorate faster than 100% silicone caulks, cracking after a while. I'll look more into it, but hopefully another member who is more familiar with the stuff chimes in.
In the meantime I'd hold off on adding them to the tank until after you're 100% sure. Better safe than sorry, right?

    Hey Bryce!
Thanks for your answer pall, you're always there!
So i understand that it's less durable, but i actually prefered this one for this type of application (as it smooths the holes and make small rugs in the wall, silicone tends to be more sticky and not as versatile), i saw a A+ and thought it would be safe, now i'm having another thoughts.
And sure, don't worry! This project is going to take a while, this is for the second tank, when my baby grows, not for right away, i'm not going to put him in the tank yet!

They claim in the package that it is only one component, and water based. So i would guess its fine, also is one of the few A+.
I actually have read in another forum that they use this kind of Acrylic caulk to make wooden terrariuns, mixed with some screws of course as its not as elastic as silicone. They claim it to be safe but i need more advice.
Worst case sceanerio i'll put some 100% silicone over this one.

Thanks for the help guys. BTW! You like how it looks or what?

So guys, any ideas on this Acrylic caulk ? It's almost dry so i'll wash it tomorrow and try to set it in place, any opinion on the toxicity?
