Hi James.Welcome to the forum. A 30 gallon tall is a nice size tank. I hope that you and your daughter will enjoy it.
Hello
I'm James and new to frogs and did a search and found the site.....Looks like there is a lot of info to keep me reading.
I am about to start the process of setting up a 30g tall for a Grey tree frog for my daughter and me, she loves fish but I have tried toget her to love all animals. My parents house has two natural ponds on the property so we get to see all kinds of frogs/toads and amphibians around the pons and the pool.....I am a reefer at heart but always loved frogs and toads since I was little...I would like to one day set-up a dart frog habitat....
Hi James.Welcome to the forum. A 30 gallon tall is a nice size tank. I hope that you and your daughter will enjoy it.
Thanks I think we will....She absolutely loves frogs and toads which my wife doesn't mind them which was quite a surprise.....It is a wild caught frog that my parents caught to show her today, after seeing it there wasn't anyway she was going to let it go. So i did some research on them and laws here in Michigan and found this site thankfully and not much as far as regulations on keeping them. I did find that they are plentiful in my area.
My parents find 6-7 frogs a week around the pool or in the skimmer which isn't an always good out come. Now they have a flat floating thing in the skimmer so they have a place to climb on. Since they did that they haven't found a dead one since. 4 days ago they found 6 leopard frogs in the skimmer all fighting for space on the floaty....Crazy animals.
I listened to a recording of the call of the Grey Tree Frog and couldn't believe that the sound is exactly what we hear in the evening from the woods and pond area I would like to get another one or 2 for it hopefully they don't keep the wife up at night other wise it could be a short situation...LOL...I mean at night it is really load and from what it sounds like there are a lot of these frogs out there....Kinda nice having a natural water/wetland so close to show her animals and wildlife...She even loves to go catch snakes....
Welcome aboard. I am glad you are teaching your daughter to love and respect nature. Thats what I do at the New England Wildlife Center, teach people about wildlife.
Thank you Kurt....I believe it is an important thing for them to learn early this way they grow up and know it is important. I think it also teaches them some responsibility....Although I will be doing most of the work she always wants to help with my reef tank, so this way we can bond and learn together.....
I read the Grey Tree Frog article John and you wrote 4/5 times and did some google searching, and that article is the most comprehensive thing I found on the net....Really good article.
Thanks Jim
Yea a friend on another forum(a reef forum) started a dart frog habitat and seeing the progression and the pictures of the frogs he has really gave me the itch to keep a frog....She is only 3 1/2 right now and her and I are not ready for the dart frog addiction....We will start out a little easier and develop our skills and maybe one day....Darts.
On behalf of John and myself, thanks. I predict you will have darts before the year is up.
Welcome to the Forum. I hope you and your daughter have a great time setting up your new tank and getting to know your frog. Like JimO suggested already: it's hard to stop at just one!!![]()
Welcome to the forum James and I'm glad you like our article. We go for quality over quantitybut quantity would be nice too! Best of luck to you with your tree frog.

Hi neighbor I live about an hour away in Jenison. I joined the forum a couple of weeks ago when my Gray Tree Frog tadpoles started to morph. I have 5 froglets to date and 3 tadpoles yet to change. I collected the tadpoles from my sister's pool cover so my 10 year old son could watch their transformation. The original plan was to release them as they morphed but we became so attached to them we couldn't let them go! My teenage boys and husband are also enjoying watching the little guys grow. I have always loved animals of all kinds but stayed away from the non mammal type pet because I didn't know how to care for them properly. This site is a great resource for beginners. This started out as an educational experience for my son and turned into one for me too! I wish your family well with your new pet.![]()
Hey Malinda
Thanks the tank got finished today...Was going to be a 30g but it turns that was to big for the place I had...So I used a 15g high.....I also found aSpring Peeper in the little cage thing....Good thing I got flightless fruit flies too...He is a little active thing both have eaten and seem to be making the new tank a home....
Am I understanding this right? You are housing a gray treefrog and a spring peeper together? If so, thats not a good idea. First of all you shouldn't mix amphibian species, for all kinds of reasons, and second, gray treefrogs get big enough to eat spring peepers.
Yea I plan on letting it go but didn't want to do it in my yard....I plan on taking it back to where it came from this weekend. I didn't know it was in there till after it was brought home. The Gray was the only one I noticed.....After doing some reading here and on-line I figured he would be best to go back and not mix them after reading some of your post and stuff here which I wasn't intending to mix and only wanted the Gray......Thanks for the advice much appreciated.
You're welcome.
