A couple days ago I witnessed something VERY strange:
Two of my fire belly toadlets were engaged in a solid amplexus. It lasted at least a couple minutes before I went to get my camera, after which they broke up quite soon. Luckily I was able to film at least part of it so that now I can share it with you. Note that it was less than 5 weeks ago that they emerged from the water, and now this!?!?! In the video I have included a 5 eurocent coin and, for all the non-europeans, a standard dice. Both to give you an idea of scale, they are still very very tiny! I think this is absolutely incredible. Did anyone ever experience something like this?
Here's te video:
precocious little bastard.
i've got a tank full of them (all sizes) and i have NOT observed this. They sure love to raft in the water and pile on top of each other. But no grabby yet.
i think yours are more advanced than mine are.
On the 18th of July I heard the first calling sounds! Since then I can hear them quite regularly, amazing! I've been trying to record it but it always lasts rather short and/or happens in the middle of the night. It sounds exactly as you would expect; like the adults but much higher pitched, very cute! I am extra surprised because they hardly seem to grow anymore at all, still very very tiny! A time line: eggs laid on 26 April, first toad on land on 26 May, First time witnessed an amplexus on 2 July, First time hearing calling sounds on 18 July.
