I have larger pieces of gravel or stone strategiacally placed throughout the water that gives the crickets a fair chance at getting to safety.
I find it interesting that some crickets will immediately swim to safety and others will play dead for upwards of a couple minutes before attempting to move again. Sometimes the frogs seem to know they are playing dead in the water and once they start swimming they get eaten.
After an hour or so I just remove the uneaten or drowned crickets. A long handled plastic spoon works good for the drowned ones.
