I'm not that knowledgeable about amphibians (yes, I know it's a frog forum, but I'm a gecko person with a few RETF), but if you want a north American gecko species, check out Coleonyx. C. variegatus is native to the southwest US; C. mitratus and C. elegans a bit further south. They are small terrestrial geckos whose care is much like that of leopard geckos, though they're much smaller.
